Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. released the following statement today following the passing of David Thornton Sr.: “Today we honor the life and service of David Thornton Sr., a dedicated leader whose work strengthened the Cherokee Nation across many years and roles.

“David served on the Council of the Cherokee Nation for 18 years, from 1999 until 2017.

“He understood that leadership means building a stronger future. He turned that vision into action that improved the lives of Cherokees across the reservation and the country.

“During his tenure, he championed legislation that protected Cherokee Nation self-determination and initiatives that created more vital services for Cherokee families.

“After his service on the Council, David continued contributing to the tribe and our people through Cherokee Nation Businesses, supporting our parks program and community development in ways that are enhancing the quality of life in Northeast Oklahoma.

“His commitment to the Cherokee people was never in doubt. That dedication was recognized when Cherokee Nation’s housing addition in Vian was named for him, a fitting tribute to a man who believed in creating opportunity and stability for local families.

“David Thornton Sr. believed in service. He showed up, did the work, and helped move our Nation forward. His legacy lives on in the tribe he helped strengthen.

“On behalf of the Cherokee Nation, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and all who knew him. We are grateful for his service and leadership.”
