The Muldrow Cherokee Community Organization (MCCO) handed out 425 backpacks last Wednesday during their 2nd annual Back to School giveaway.
Organizers said the day was filled with laughter, love and community support as hundreds gathered to take advantage of the many free services being offered, including haircuts, manicures, physicals and immunizations, school supplies, dental kits, and much more.
“A massive thank you to McKenzie Chaser and Lindsey Russell for knocking out 110 haircuts,” Tashaa Harris, with the MCCO said. “And to Deree Stafford for stepping in to help with the haircuts, giving our girls a much-needed break.”
Harris said the glam squad consisted of Alli Lomon, Jensi Fields, Allie Harris and Sydney Weedon, who painted nails and brought smiles to so many little girls’ faces.
Laura Williams and Tra Moreland organized and handed out dental kits, while Jill Russell helped distribute backpacks.
“And they did it with such joy and energy,” Harris said.
Harris said the MCCO also wishes to thank the following: Donna Edwards, Willie Chism, Bryan and Tracy McKenzie, Jackson Harris, Braxton McKenzie, Traci Stewart and her staff from the Sallisaw Health Department, Mrs. Dodson for helping families sign up for free car seats; and Muldrow Fire Department and Pafford EMS.
“We were honored to have Daryl Legg and his beautiful daughter, Addison Legg, who is this year’s Miss Diamond Daze, stop by and lend a hand,” she said.
Mr. Followell grilled 200 hot dogs for everyone to enjoy and refreshments were served as well.
“Thank you to Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. and Running Strong for always believing in our mission, and providing the support we need to serve our community,” she continued. “Your generosity helps us make days like this possible.”
“And thanks to my mom, Betty Neighbors and her trusty sidekick, Martha Olsen, for keeping everyone, especially me, in line,” Harris laughed. “And my husband Jack, for putting up with all my stress and standing by me through it all.
“We truly couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you. Our community is stronger because of your hearts, your hands, and your willingness to serve,” she said. “Until next year.”
