Roland and Muldrow’s high school baseball teams start play in the Central Shootout on Thursday.
Roland, which was placed in Pool B, plays Keys at 3 p.m. on Thursday and on Friday the Rangers take on Class 3A No. 15 Vian at 11 a.m. before ending pool play with a 1 p.m. contest against Chouteau-Mazie.
Muldrow opens Pool A-play at 11 a.m. on Thursday against Central, and on Friday the Bulldogs take on Pocola at 5 p.m.
On Saturday the third-place team from each pool will square off at noon for the consolation title, the second-place squads will play at 2:30 p.m. to determine third place and the championship will be decided in the 5 p.m. contest.
Roland swept a District 4A-8 doubleheader from Muldrow at Ranger Field on Friday, winning the first game 12-9 before taking the second contest 17-11.
Roland 12, Muldrow 9
The Bulldogs scored the first six runs of the game but the Rangers took the lead for good with five runs in the fifth on their way to the win in the opener.
Muldrow’s Konnor Wight started the game with a base hit to left field before Rylan Walters’ bunt single put runners on first and second. The runners advanced on a pitch in the dirt and Jacob Claborn’s two-RBI single to right field gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Two outs later another pitch in the dirt allowed Claborn to score the third run.
In the top of the second, Jericho Leathers reached first on a third-strike wild pitch, and after Colby Armer walked, Josh Crawford’s single to shallow center field made the score 4-0. Wight’s RBI base hit to left field increased the advantage to five, and one out later Claborn’s sacrifice fly gave Muldrow a 6-0 lead.
Roland recorded four runs with two outs in the bottom of the second. Elijah Dalton and Hunter Taylor walked and pitches hit Colyn Tuck and Paxton Pitts to put the Rangers on the board. Cole Davis drove in two runs with his single to center field and on the play Pitts scored the fourth run on an error.
In the Roland third, Seth Weatherford doubled to deep center field, and with one out Jaxon Wiggins hit a two-run homer over the left field fence to tie the score at 6-all. After Dalton singled to left field, Claborn replaced Crawford on the mound and struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead (7-6) with a run in the top of the fourth on base hits by Crawford and Wight and an error on a bunt by Walters. With the bases loaded, Weatherford registered a strikeout to end the at-bat.
In the Muldrow fifth, Weatherford recorded three strikeouts while walking two and hitting one batter.
The Rangers went in front 11-7 in the bottom of the fifth after scoring five runs. Walks to Austin Southern and Wiggins and Dalton’s base hit to left field loaded the bases, and Taylor’s RBI single to shallow center field tied the score (7-7). A passed ball and an outfield error added three more runs, and Roland led 11-7 following Davis’ RBI single to center field.
Davis relieved Weatherford in the top of the sixth.
With one out in the Muldrow sixth, Lex Sharp walked and Breckin Allen’s singled to deep left field put runners on first and second. An infield error with Leathers at the plate resulted in Muldrow’s eighth run and a wild pitch allowed Allen to record the Bulldogs’ ninth run and cut the deficit to two (11-9).
The Rangers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Weatherford’s walk and stolen base, Wiggins’ walk and a wild pitch.
Wight reached on an infield error in the Muldrow seventh with two outs before a flyout ended the game.
Weatherford was the winning pitcher in the game and Davis picked up the save.
Roland 17, Muldrow 11
The Rangers trailed early in the second game before taking a 10-4 lead in the fifth after scoring five runs.
Hunter Taylor picked up the win on the mound and Davis got his second save of the day.
Earlier last week, Roland split their two games against Sallisaw. The Rangers defeated the Black Diamonds 6-5 in nine innings last Monday in Sallisaw and lost 15-4 at home last Tuesday.

The Rangers scored the winning run in the top of the ninth inning last Monday in Sallisaw as Roland defeated the Black Diamonds for the first time since 2014.
The game was tied at 5-all after eight innings. Cole Davis started the Roland ninth with a base hit, and Dakota Bush’s sacrifice bunt moved Davis to second. Davis tagged up and went to third after catcher Logan Bolin caught Seth Weatherford’s high fly ball near the Sallisaw dugout while falling down. Davis raced home with the go-ahead run after Bolin threw to third, where Sallisaw’s shortstop and third baseman collided.
Davis, who went to the mound in the bottom of the eighth, gave up a base hit to Jaxon McTyre in the bottom of the ninth before a double play and a strikeout secured the win.
The Rangers led 3-0 in the top of the third before Sallisaw tied it with three in the bottom of the frame. The Black Diamonds went in front 4-3 in the fourth when Hunter Hutchinson’s squeeze play scored Justin Richards, who singled earlier in the at-bat.
Roland reclaimed the lead (5-4) with a pair of runs in the sixth. Bush drove in one of the runs with a single.
McTyre’s home run in the seventh tied the score at 5-all.
Jaxon Wiggins was Roland’s starting pitcher in the contest.
