Eufaula 35

(Finals)

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 18-0 for the season on Saturday night in Checotah as Muldrow overcame an early deficit to down the Lady Ironheads (15-2).

In the opening period Hannah Boyett’s corner 3-pointer put the Lady Bulldogs on top and Paige Hughes’ 2-pointer from the wing made the score 5-2 with 5:04 left. Following a basket by Eufaula’s Ashley Mills, field goals by Macayla Needham and Mykah Osborne gave the Lady Ironheads an 8-5 lead with 2:56 to go. Muldrow tied the score on Chelsi Possage’s trey from the top of the key and two free throws apiece by Boyett and Taylen Collins put the Lady Bulldogs in front for good. Muldrow went to the second in front 12-9.

The Lady Bulldogs added five points (9-4) to their advantage in the second stanza and led 21-13 at the half. Chalynn Mayes hit two inside baskets and Madison Chambers added three points for Muldrow while Kiaya Burns made a 3 for Eufaula.

Hughes connected on a 3 from the wing to start the scoring in the third quarter and give Muldrow a 24-13 advantage but a 3 by Journi James and 2-pointers by Mills and Jordan Jones cut the deficit to four (24-20) with 5:02 left. The Lady Bulldogs ended the period on a 16-0 run on Boyett’s trey, a basket and a three-point play by Collins, two Chambers’ field goals and a steal and a basket and a layup by Possage. Muldrow went to the fourth leading 40-20.

Muldrow head coach Jana Armer was proud of her team’s performance on Saturday night, especially on the defensive end.

“They were a big challenge for our defense with great post girls and shooters and I knew we were going to have to buckle down on defense and I felt like we did that in the third quarter, and especially at the start of the fourth,” Armer said. “A lot of our offense revolves around how hard we’re playing defense. If we’re good on defense it seems to be clicking on offense. I’ve given the girls a number of what I want them to hold the other team to and it seems to be a big enough challenge for them every game and they’re striving to do that every game. We want to hold somebody under definitely 40 points and sometimes we even go lower. It’s made us pick up our defense a lot.”

Armer was also proud of her team’s unselfishness on the court.

“The team chemistry of this group is probably one of the things that makes them so special, the fact that they share the basketball so well, sometimes too much,” said Amer. “Sometimes they make one more pass than they should but they don’t care who scores, they just want to win. All you’ve got to do is watch them to see how excited they are for each other.”
