The Christians Heart and a Garden

The Christians Heart and a Garden
By Shirley R. Watts

What a beautiful time of the year with Spring in the air, you begin preparing the soil for gardening. You till it, weed it, pick up rocks etc. Gardening is work! But there is a joy also in planting a seed, watch it come forth and produce fruit.

Gardening is a fulltime job, you don’t just sow the seed and come back later for the harvest. You must weed it. It’s a battle.

The Christian’s heart is like a garden. There are weeds (sins) that get into it and if you leave them, they will take over your life. They not only hurt your heart but also hurt others. The Word of God is the most powerful weed killer there is. Keeping the weeds out of the heart is also a full-time job. The weeds that get into the heart are the worst kind of weeds. They are all black with signs of Satan written on them, and they come with deception. The only way to remove the weeds from the heart is to use the Word of God and Prayer daily.

What are some of the weeds?

Lying is one weed that seems to take over very quickly in the heart. It can get out of control fast. It has been said that if you lie, you will do almost anything. Today children are lying to their parents, parents are lying to each other and one lie leads to another, before you know it, lying is all you do because you will have to tell a lie to cover up the last lie you told.

Stealing is another popular weed that can become so natural to the heart. There are many ways to steal. Stealing is taking anything that does not belong to you. There is no respect for others. There is no way to justify stealing.

Adultery is very popular weed today. It seems as though it is becoming the norm. Adultery kills marriages. It will usually begin with lying to your spouse and then stealing time from her/him and giving to another. It too becomes a way of life and lies. Sexual sins are out of control.

Abuse of children is also out of control. Many children will go to bed each night after being abused by a parent. Parent you are wrong and I pray you will “weed your garden” as you read this and cry out to God. God will deal with you in a special way, because you are abusing His little ones.

Idols in the heart, the worst kind of weed. God hates idols especially when you place them before Him. They can creep in very subtly. This is Satan’s favorite. When the idols take over your heart, you are not worshiping God, but Satan. Idols can be your children, spouse, job, time, fashion, movies, drugs, sex, alcohol and politics. There are many other weeds but we will look at them at another time.

It is sad to say that these creep into the Christian’s life. We are to be the Light of the world, not join them in the darkness.

Why are the weeds (sins) in the Christian’s life? It is because the Word of God is not allowed. The weeds took over. There is more joy in the weeds than in the Word! How can you remove the weeds? If you are born-again, you need to remove them! The Word of God removes weeds! As you look in the Word you will see Jesus. When you see Jesus. you will know who you are and He will show you the weeds. Confess them to Him, and ask Him to forgive you.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us (I John 1:9-10). Receive His Word with meekness. It’s a beautiful sight when the heart is clean. Be fruitful!

What are the weeds in “your” garden? What will you do about them? Will you allow them to rule over you? Are you willing to repent and be fruitful?
