Teach Me Your Way, O Lord
Commentary
April 21, 2026
Teach Me Your Way, O Lord
For You are Great
By Shirley R. Watts

“ Te a c h me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name (Ps 86:11-12). “Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass”(Ps 37:5). “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (Ps 32:8).

“A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps (Prov 16:9). “Way” means a “direction, a path” that we choose to take in this life. We all should pray this prayer. Let us choose God’s Way! “As for God, His way is perfect” (Ps. 18:30).

Have you chosen God’s Way? ‘Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death” (Jer 21:8).

Today there are many directions one can choose to walk. As a result millions are lost and no peace in the heart. They live without God in their life. They have chosen the “wrong way.”

The enemy is attacking in all directions in our Nation and around the world. The proud and violent men and women are everywhere. The enemy hates God, the Christian and God’s Word.

Christian, we need to pray! We need a revival in the heart! Listen as David prays when the enemy attacked him.

Jesus said: “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven…” (Matt. 6:9).

David humbled himself before God. He acknowledged God…the Living and only God. ”for I am poor and needy… You are my God…Save your servant who trusts in You… Be merciful to me, O Lord…for I cry to You all day long…For to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.”

Is this the way you pray?

David loved God and was His servant and devoted. He had confidence in God. (I John 5:14-15). He was going in the right direction and would wait upon God to direct his steps. God’s way is the right way!

David praises God. “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You…Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord…Nor are there any works like Your works…For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God” (Psalm 86).

Praise brings God’s power into our lives! Our God of Heaven, the Creator, is great and the only forgiving, loving, merciful God, David knew he could depend on Him to protect him from his enemies. The enemy always loses!

God answers the prayer of those who are devoted to Him, and who walks in His way.

Christian, when the enemy attacks, remember that God is all we have to protect us. There is no politician, church, family member. It is God who we must call upon on. “In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, For You will answer me” (Ps 86).

David brought his problems to the Lord. God took care of David many times. He was always thankful, and continued to praise Him for all He did. I believe David continued to pray, “Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth…” There is no victory without the Lord!

David was confident that God would answer his prayer and that all would honor and glorify God. He prayed that “those who hate me may see it and be ashamed, because You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.” David wanted to be a witness to the lost.

He stayed focused on his personal relationship and his walk with the Lord. He knew who he was and who he served. He knew where his help came from. He guarded his spiritual walk with the Lord and would not allow the enemy to distract him.

“But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.”

“Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth: I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And I will glorify Your name forevermore.” (Ps. 86) Let’s pray: “Cause me to know the way in which I should walk… ” (Ps 143:8).
