Roland squads get conference sweeps over Poteau, Checotah
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

Last week could have not gone any better than it did for the Roland High School basketball squads as they got NOAA Conference sweeps on the road against Poteau on Feb. 11 at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, then did the same thing to the visiting Checotah teams Friday night at the Ranger Dome.

On Feb. 11 at Poteau High School’s Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, the Lady Rangers routed the host Lady Pirates 51-16, then the Runnin’ Rangers did likewise to the Pirates as Roland’s boys posted a 63-22 win.

On Friday night at the Ranger Dome against Checotah, the Lady Rangers defeated the Lady Wildcats 59-21, followed by the Runnin’ Rangers winning 72-45 over the ’Cats.

In the boys’ road victory over Poteau, the Runnin’ Rangers (20-1 overall, 10-0 in NOAA Conference play) needed very little time to put away the Pirates as Roland jumped out to a 23-5 lead after a quarter, which became a 50-13 halftime advantage and a 58-21 lead after three periods.

For the game, Damonte Owens scored a game-high 26 points to lead Roland, followed by Buck Triplett with 14 points, Mason Kemp with seven points, Kade Shook and Kayden Hartt with five points each and Cason Perryman, Raesean Perryman and Landon Fowler with two points apiece.

In the girls’ road win over Poteau, the Lady Rangers (17-4, 10-0) put away their game against the Lady Pirates early as Roland took a 22-4 lead after a quarter and never were headed.

For the game, Roland put a trio of players into double figures, led by Ryanne Nelke’s gamehigh 19 points, followed by Haven Freeman’s 11 points and Halle Freeman’s 10 points. Lilly Cole had five points, followed by Julianna Trujillo with four points and Molly Carver with two points.

In the boys’ home victory over Checotah, after leading only by five points at 19-14 after a quarter and three points at halftime at 30-27, the Runnin’ Rangers broke open the game as they doubled the Wildcats 18-9 in the third quarter to take a 48-36 lead into the final period. A 24-9 fourth quarter sealed the deal for Roland.

For the game, Owens scored a game-high 32 points to lead Roland, followed by Triplett with 10 points, Shook with eight points, Kemp with seven points, Hartt with six points, Fowler with four points, Raesean Perryman with three points and Cason Perryman with two points.

In the girls’ home win over Checotah, the Lady Rangers jumped out to a 22-5 lead after a quarter and were never headed.

For the game, Nelke scored a game-high 19 points and Trujillo added 14 points to lead Roland, followed by Carver and Halle Freeman with nine points each, Haven Freeman with six points and Cole with two points.
