Roland falls to Bethel, celebrating homecoming, first-ever HoF inductees on Friday
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

SHAWNEE — It was a rough Thursday night for the Roland Rangers as they fell 62-0 to the host Bethel Wildcats in a District 2AII-3 game.

The Wildcats (3-4 overall, 2-2 in district play) kicked an onside kick on the opening kickoff and recovered it. The ’Cats scored on the very next play on a 43-yard touchdown pass with a successful two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 11:48 left in the first quarter.

The Rangers (1-6, 1-3) saw their next two drives end with interceptions, with the Wildcats cashing in both takeaways with TDs as they took a 20-0 lead after the first period.

The ’Cats put away the game with a 30-point second quarter to take a 50-0 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Bethel then scored a touchdown in each of the two periods of the second half.

The Wildcats had 475 yards of offense, compared to Roland’s 99. The Rangers turned the ball over on three interceptions, while fumbling twice but recovering both of those.

The Rangers will return home to Ranger Stadium for a 7 p.m. Friday homecoming game against the Hugo Buffaloes (5-2, 3-1), who are tied for second place in the district with Kiefer — who beat the Rangers 58-7 on Oct. 4. Both Hugo and Kiefer are a game behind districtleading Kingston (6-1, 4-0).

The game also will see the first-ever inductees enshrined into the newly-created Roland High School Sports Hall of Fame. The Class of 2024 will include Richard E. Cosner III, Larry Tate, Gerald Harvell, Fran Whitsitt and Debbie Cosner.
