Spring cleaning is not limited to households. For Sequoyah County Commissioners Ray Watts, in District 1, and Beau Burlison, in District 2, their crews are doing some spring cleaning of their own.
At their weekly meeting on March 11, the commissioners approved agreements to work on private property in the respective districts.
In District 1, its an agreement with Laura Moore, representing Farrell-Moore Family Trust.
“There are some big, huge trees in the ditch, and these keep falling out in the road,” Watts explained. “They are going to let us clean them out.”
In District 2, the agreement is with Darren “Trey” Girdner III.
“There are some trees that are hanging over the road. I’ve already had to go out and cut up a tree that was just lying over the road at Pinhook [Corner],” Burlison said. “They’re about to put some new fence up, so we’re going to push those trees over and off of our road, and then they’re going to clean them up. So, pretty much the same problem.”
These are the kind of agreements with property owners that work well for the commissioners.
“I wish everybody would let us do that, clear those right-ofways off,” District 3 Commissioner Jim Rogers said.
In other business:
• The commissioners approved a resolution authorizing an election for board of directors for the Sequoyah County Fair Board. Filing period for candidates is March 18-22, and is open to any county registered voter who resides in the district they wish to represent. The election will be April 30 at three polling locations: District 1 County Barn in Muldrow, District 2 County Barn in Vian and District 3 County Barn in Sallisaw.
• Jonathan Teague, director for Sequoyah County Emergency Management, announced that a meeting of the Local Emergency Planning Commission (LEPC) will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Wheeler Event Center in Sallisaw.
• Approved the transfer of appropriations from Commissioners Capital Outlay to Assessor’s M&O (maintenance and operations) in the amount of $20,000.
• Approved the transfer of appropriates from District 2 T2 to District 2 Personal Services in the amount of $30,000 “for our vacation buyback,” Burlison explained.
The commissioners meet at 10 a.m. Mondays in the courthouse.
