District Byes Send Roland to Area III Regional

Because of their rankings the Class 3A No. 13 Roland girls (14- 8 overall) and the No. 7 Rangers (13-6) received district byes and automatically advanced to next week’s 3A, Area III, regional winner’s bracket.

Both Roland squads will take on the winners from District 4 (Eufaula or Kellyville) at 6:30 p.m. (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys) in regional action on Feb. 24 (Thursday) inside Roland’s Ranger Dome.

As of Monday the Eufaula girls were 10-8 overall and the Kellyville girls were 9-12 and on the boys’ side the Eufaula Ironheads were 13-5 and the Ponies were 9-12.

On Friday Roland visited Spiro and on Thursday the Lady Rangers and Rangers hosted Muldrow (see separate story). Last Tuesday Roland took on Checotah at home.

Roland Girls 51, Spiro 37

The Class 3A No. 13 Lady Rangers (14-8 for the season) outscored the host Lady Bulldogs (2-13) 29-15 in the second half Friday night in LeFlore County to register the conference victory.

Roland led 8-7 after the first eight minutes but the halftime score was tied at 22-all after Spiro trimmed a point (15-14) off the deficit in the second stanza.

The Lady Rangers outscored Spiro 14-8 in the third period and 15-7 in the final frame.

Scoring for the Lady Rangers were Racheal Watie (15 points), Addison Cole (12), Haven Freeman (7), Lilly Medicine Bird and Kynlei Earnhart (6 each), Laikyn Conaway (3) and Brooklyn Hallbauer (2).

Jasmine Dees was Spiro’s leading scorer with 14 points.

Spiro Boys 41, Roland 31

The Class 3A No. 7 Rangers (13-6 overall) sliced two points (8-6) off a 23-17 halftime deficit in the third quarter Friday night at Spiro but the Bulldogs (9-11) out scored Roland 12-6 in the fourth period to secure the conference win.

Spiro took a 12-10 advantage to the second stanza before increasing its lead (11-7) before the intermission.

Malachi Sevenstar made four 3-pointers in the game and led all scorers with 12 points and also registering points for the Rangers were Tuvaris Noonan, Bryce Medicine Bird, Desean Cruse and Carson Wiggins (4 each), Peyton Whisenant (2) and Ashton Peters (1).

Brycen Graham (11 points) and Jared Huff (9) were Spiro’s leading scorers.

Roland Girls 50, Checotah 30

The Lady Rangers cruised to the NOAA win last Tuesday night inside the Ranger Dome after leading 35-10 at the half.

Roland (13-7 overall) outscoring the visiting Lady Wildcats (4-15) 16-4 in the first stanza and 19-6 in the second.

Checotah trimmed two points (9-7) off the deficit in the third period and three (11-8) in the final eight minutes.

Racheal Watie (18 points), Haven Freeman (14), Addison Cole (10) and Lilly Medicine Bird (8) provided the scoring for the Lady Rangers.

Checotah Boys 57, Roland 50 (OT)

The Rangers (13-4 for the season) forced the extra period by outscoring the visiting Wildcats 17-13 in the fourth quarter last Tuesday night inside the Ranger Dome but Checotah (8-11) used a 10-3 advantage in the final four minutes to secure the NOAA win.

Checotah led 12-11 after the first eight minutes and 19-18 at the intermission after both teams recorded seven points in the second.

The Rangers went to the fourth trailing 34- 30 after being outscored 15-12 in the third.

Registering points for Roland were Carson Wiggins (15 points), Bryce Medicine Bird (14), Malachi Sevenstar (9), Peyton Whisenant (6), Tuvaris Noonan (4) and Ashton Peters (2).

The Roland girls and boys visit Spiro on Friday before hosting Sallisaw in a make-up game Tuesday night.
