Central Tigers go 3-1 last week, while Lady Tigers split four games
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

The Central Tigers went 3-1 last week, posting a 65-50 win over Wister on Feb. 3 at Jerry Carpenter Memorial Gymnasium, a 51-47 Big 8 Conference home win Feb. 4 over Howe and a 60-23 road win over Gans on Thursday night at Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse. The only blemish was a 64-35 home loss to Muldrow on Saturday afternoon at the Central Gym.

The Lady Tigers went 2-2 last week, duplicating the boys’ wins over Wister by a score of 5033 on Feb. 3 and a 5215 victory over Gans on Thursday night at Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse.

However, the Lady Tigers fell 75-34 in a home Big 8 Conference game to Howe on Feb. 4 and lost 50-38 to Muldrow on Saturday afternoon.

In the boys’ win over Wister, The Tigers (147) jumped out to a 2110 lead after a quarter, which became a 32-13 halftime advantage and a 48-32 lead after three periods.

For the game, Josh Brunk led Central with 22 points, followed by Paitton Merrill with 10 points, Braxin Goodson with eight points, Hardy Buzzard with seven points, Gavin Randolph with six points, Noah Buzzard with three points and Aidan Sainer and Kiefer Bailey with two points apiece.

In the girls’ win over Wister, the Lady Tigers (16-5) jumped out to a 17-8 lead after a period, which became a 25-11 advantage at the half and a 43-20 lead entering the fourth quarter.

For the game, Haley Cheek scored a gamehigh 14 points and Ayrland Jiles added 11 points to lead Central, followed by Paris Campbell with eight points, Cheyenne Busch with seven points, Hadlie Woods with six points, Charlie Petree with two points and Zoey Lattimore and Sarah Buchanan with a free throw apiece.

In the boys’ home conference win over Howe, the Tigers (2-1 in Big 8 Conference play) trailed 28-22 at halftime but outscored the Lions 29-19 in the second half to get the come-frombehind conference victory.

For the game, Brunk scored 18 points and Sainer added 17 points to lead Central, followed by Goodson with seven points, Noah Buzzard with six points, Randolph with two points and Hardy Buzzard with a free throw.

In the girls’ home conference loss to Howe, the Lady Lions roared out to a 19-9 lead after a quarter en route to a 3616 halftime advantage and a 58-23 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Woods led the Lady Tigers (1-2 in Big 8 Conference play) with 10 points, followed by Jiles and Bair with six points each, Busch with four points, Cheek with three points and Campbell, Petree and Ryleigh Pierce with two points apiece.

In the boys’ win over Gans, the Tigers blanked the Grizzlies 19-0 in the opening period en route to a 32-11 halftime lead and a 50-15 advantage after three quarters.

For the game, Hardy Buzzard scored a game-high 10 points to lead Central, followed by Brunk — playing against his former team — and Cale Stewart with seven points, Randolph, Bailey and Aiden Cawhorn with six points each, Sainer and Kage Poindexter each with three points and Goodson, Merrill, Nathan Vann, O’Dell Parker, Jake Woods and Brycen Chandler-Eisman with two points apiece.

In the girls’ win over Gans, the Lady Tigers clawed their way to a 21-3 lead after the first quarter, which became a 41-4 halftime advantage and a 49-5 lead going into the final period.

In the boys’ loss to Muldrow, after a Teaguen Collins basket put the Bulldogs ahead 7-1 with 6:58 left in the first quarter, the Tigers responded with a 6-3 run, capped by a free throw by Hardy Buzzard, to cut the Central deficit to 10-6 with 3:40 left in the period.

The ’Dogs ended the quarter with a 4-2 run, capped by Parker Sevenstar’s basket with 1:30 remaining in the period to put Muldrow ahead 14-8 after the end of the first quarter. However, that ended up being the last point of the game in which the content was a close one.

The Bulldogs bit the Tigers to the tune of 22-4 in the second quarter to take a 36-12 halftime lead en route to a 54-26 advantage going into the final period.

In defeat, Goodson scored seven points to lead Central, followed by Randolph, Merrill, Sainer, Joe Brooks and Hardy Buzzard with four points each, Parker and Noah Buzzard each with two points and Vann, Chandler-Eisman, Stewart and Cawhorn with a free throw apiece.

Muldrow took a 3119 lead into the locker rooms at halftime and had a 34-19 lead with 6:33 left in the third quarter.

The Lady Tigers made a run as a basket by Bair with 34 seconds left in the period capped a 13-3 run for Central to cut its deficit to 3732 after three quarters. However, that ended up being as close as the Lady Tigers would get.

In defeat, Bair scored a game-high 14 points and Cheek added 10 points to lead Central, followed by Jiles with six points, Woods with five points and Pierce with three points.
