Central squads sweep Gans, Gore, split with Howe, suffer losses to Sallisaw, Silo
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

The Central High School basketball teams completed a stretch of five games in six days, in which the Tigers went 3-2 and the Lady Tigers went 2-3.

The Tigers ended the week with a three-game winning streak as they got a 47-44 road win Feb. 3 at Howe, a 64-17 road victory last Thursday night on Senior Night at Gans High School’s Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse and capped the week off with a 57-39 road win over Gore last Friday night at Gore Event Center.

The Tigers’ five-game, six-day stretch of games started with a pair of losses — a 69-62 loss to Sallisaw on Jan. 31 at Paul Post Field House and a 72-70 loss to Silo on Feb. 2 in Savanna.

The Lady Tigers won their final two games of the busy six days off hoops as they celebrated Senior Night with a 6038 “road” win over Gans and a 47-37 road victory over Gore last Friday night.

To begin the stretch of games for the Lady Tigers, they lost 45-30 at Sallisaw on Jan. 31, fell 47-39 to Savanna on Feb. 2 in Savanna and suffered a 66-42 setback at Howe on Feb. 3.

In the boys’ win over Howe, the Tigers (11-8), who trailed 19-10 after a period, outscored the Lions 37-25 over the final three quarters to get the comeback victory.

For the game, Central put a trio of players into double figures, led by Noah Buzzard’s gamehigh 15 points, followed by Gavin Randolph’s 13 points and Josh Brunk’s 11 points. Paitton Merrill and Aiden Cawhorn each scored four points.

In the boys’ Senior Night victory over Gans, the Tigers led 18-3 after a quarter and were never headed, as a running clock was used for the majority of the game.

For the contest, Central put a threesome into double figures, led by Cawhorn’s game-high 15 points, followed by Buzzard’s 11 points and Kage Poindexter’s 10 points. Randolph and Cale Stewart scored nine points each, while Ryder Justice, Kiefer Bailey, Brycen Chandler-Eisman, Jace Money and Kaw-Liga Lewis scored two points apiece.

In the boys’ win over Gore, the Tigers jumped out to a 21-10 lead after a period, which became a 34-18 halftime advantage and a 49-32 lead going into the fourth quarter.

For the game, Buzzard led Central with 20 points, followed by Brunk with 13 points, Merrill with seven points, Randolph with six points, Cawhorn with four points, Bailey with three points and Jake Woods and Odell Parker with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Sallisaw, the Tigers used a strong end to the opening period to cut their deficit to 22-19 after the first quarter, but ended up falling behind 58-41 by the 5:23 mark of the fourth quarter.

Central tried to rally late but came up short.

In defeat, Central put a trio of players into double figures, led by Randolph with 19 points, followed by Brunk with 15 points and Buzzard with 13 points. Cawhorn had nine points, followed by Woods with four points and Merrill with two points.

In the boys’ loss to Silo, the Rebels rallied from a 19-16 first-quarter deficit to take a 37-30 halftime lead thanks to a 21-11 second period. Silo led 56-50 entering the fourth quarter.

In the final period, the Tigers made a rally as they outscored the Rebels 20-16, but Central’s rally came up short.

In defeat, Central put a quartet of players into double figures, led by a game-high 16 points from Buzzard, followed by Brunk with 14 points, Merrill with 12 points and Randolph with 11 points. Woods and Cawhorn each scored seven points, while Chandler-Eisman added three points.

In the girls’ Senior Night win over Gans, the Lady Tigers (11-9), who trailed 2-0 early, ended the first quarter on a 15-2 run to take a 15-4 lead after a quarter, which became a 36-17 halftime advantage and a 53-27 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Central put a trio of players into double figures, led by Paris Campbell’s gamehigh 17 points, followed by Cambree Bair’s 16 points and Sara Williams with 12 points. Cheyenne Busch scored four points each, followed by Sadie Huff with three points and Brianna Taylor, Charlie Petree, Gracie Thompson and Sarah Buchanan with two points apiece.

In the girls’ victory over Gore, the Lady Tigers doubled the Lady Pirates 12-6 in the first quarter, then used a 15-8 second period to take a 27-14 halftime lead, which became a 3720 lead going into the fourth quarter.

For the game, Bair scored a game-high 16 points and Busch added 12 points to lead Central, followed by Williams with nine points, Campbell with four points, Taylor with three points, Buchanan with two points and Thompson with a free throw.

In Central’s loss to Sallisaw, Williams hit a basket to give the Lady Tigers an 11-9 lead with 4:13 left before halftime, but the Lady Diamonds ended the first half with an 11-5 run to take a 2016 halftime lead. Sallisaw took a 33-23 advantage into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Williams scored 13 points and Bair added 12 points to lead Central, followed by Campbell with three points and Alivia Meadows with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Silo, the Lady Rebels doubled the Lady Tigers 16-8 in the first quarter en route to a 26-15 halftime lead and a 36-29 advantage heading into the final period.

In defeat, Bair scored a game-high 16 points to lead Central, followed by Williams with eight points, Campbell with seven points, Busch with six points and Huff with two points.

In the girls’ loss to Howe, the Lady Lions jumped out to a 23-14 lead after a period, but the Lady Tigers used a 14-8 second period to cut their deficit to 31-28 at halftime.

However, Howe put away any hopes of a Central comeback on this night as the Lady Li-ons outscored the Lady Tigers 27-4 in the third quarter to take a 58-32 lead into the final period.

In defeat, Bair scored a game-high 22 points to lead Central, followed by Busch with seven points, Williams with five points, Campbell and Thompson with three points each and Petree with two points.

Last Saturday afternoon, the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) announced that the Central teams will visit county rival Vian in the Class 2A District Tournament, which will either be Feb. 20 or Feb. 21 at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at B.J. Traw Gymnasium.

This will mark the fifth time the Tigers and the Wolverines will meet, with Vian holding a 3-1 edge.

It will be the fourth time the Lady Tigers and the Lady Wolverines will square off, with Central winning each of the first three games.

Central’s Cambree Bair looks to make a pass during last Friday night’s game against Gore at Gore Event Center.
