Gans Lady Grizzlies sweep Okay after suffering losses to Leflore, Arkoma, Keota
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

Last week’s softball action for the Gans Lady Grizzlies ended on a high note as they swept Riverside Conference foe Okay by scores of 37-2 in three innings and 7-3 last Thursday at Okay.

However, it was a rough start to the week for the Lady Grizzlies as they lost both homes games on March 23 — 13-1 to Leflore and 19-7 to Arkoma — before falling 13-0 at Keota on March 24.

In the Game 1 win over Okay, the Lady Grizzlies (2-7) scored double digits in runs in each of the three innings, leading 12-0 after an inning and 27-2 after two innings, then ended the game with a 10-run third inning.

For the game, Makenzy Hunter was 5-for-6 with two doubles, her first home run of the season, 11 runs batted in and five runs scored, Abigail Leach was 5-for-5 with three doubles, a triple, five RBIs and three runs scored, Nora Barnes was 3-for-5 with two doubles, her first homer of the season, six RBIs and five runs scored, Yesenia Gaona was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Taylor Barger was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs and KrisLynn Martin was 2-for-2 with four runs scored and three RBIs for Gans. All total, the Lady Grizzlies had 22 hits.

Gaona (1-4) got her first win of the season, going the first two innings. Barnes pitched the third and final inning.

In the Game 2 victory over Okay, the Lady Grizzlies led 3-0 after an inning and 6-3 after two innings. Their final run scored in the third inning.

For the contest, Barnes was 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored, Leach was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Hunter doubled with an RBI and a run scored and Barger doubled and scored once for Gans.

Avigail Green (1-0) got her first win of the season, pitching the first inning. After Hunter got the next two outs, Leach went the rest of the way.

In the loss to Leflore, the Lady Savages jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning. A three-run fourth inning out the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Green was 2-for-2 with a run batted in for Gans. Gaona took the loss.

In the loss to Arkoma, the Lady Mustangs also jumped out early as a six-run first inning and a three-run second inning gave them a 9-0 lead. A six-run fifth inning put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Hunter was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs batted in, while Gaona was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Gans. Destiny Phillips (0-2) suffered the loss, although she recorded three strikeouts.

In the loss to Keota, the Lady Lions scored once in the first inning and 12 runs in the second inning to put the game into runrule status. Due to five Gans errors, only three of Keota’s runs were earned.

Keota pitcher Danielle Drummonds threw a one-hitter, with that hit being a single by Barnes.

Gaona took the loss, going just 1.1 innings. Phillips went the rest of the way.
