Roland Rangers sweep Spiro, suffer losses to Kiefer to open baseball season
Roland pitchers have two no-hitters against Bulldogs
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

The Roland Rangers baseball team got their season underway during Spring Break by playing two games against two of their District 3A-8 foes — the Spiro Bulldogs and the Kiefer Trojans.

The Rangers swept the Bulldogs by scores of 14-2 in four innings and 10-1 in four innings on March 17 in Spiro.

Last Wednesday, the Rangers suffered two district losses to the host Trojans as Kiefer took the opener 4-0, then took nightcap 9-0.

The pitching duo of Alex Brant and Carson Manchester combined to no-hit the ’Dogs. Brant (1-1) got the win, going the first two innings with six strikeouts. Manchester went the final two innings with five Ks.

In the opener against Spiro, a four-run first inning, a seven-run third inning and a three-run fourth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Avery Moya was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Brett Mauldin was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored and Brant doubled with four runs batted in and a run scored for Roland.

In the nightcap against Spiro, Ricky Watts (1-0) got the complete-game victory as he threw the second nohitter of the day, fanning eight batters in four innings.

The Rangers (2-2 overall, 2-2 in district play) got off fast once again with a four-run first inning for a 4-0 lead, which became an 8-1 advantage after two innings. A two-run fourth inning put the game into run-rule status.

For the contest, Brant was 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs, Austin Benham was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, Laken Honeycutt was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Moya was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Channing McKinney was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored for Roland.

In Game 1 against Kiefer, Kiefer pitcher Landon Ruggieri threw a complete-game fourhitter with 10 strikeouts.

The Trojans scored twice in the first inning and once in the second and fourth innings for all the run support Ruggieri needed. In defeat, Brant was 2-for-3 with a double, while Manchester and Derrick Allen each singled for Roland.

Brant was the hardluck loser as he went six innings with four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Kiefer pitcher Trent Cantrell pitched a no-hitter with 21 strikeouts.

The Trojans scored single runs in the third and fifth innings, then erupted for six runs in the sixth inning, for an 8-0 lead.

Laken Honeycutt (01) suffered the loss going the first five innings with three strikeouts. Avery Moya went the final two innings with a strikeout.
