Both Muldrow High School basketball teams will be playing for at least one more day this week.
At the Class 4A Regional Tournament last Saturday night at Roger Sharp Activity Center, the Bulldogs lost the regional title game 7066 to the Fort Gibson Tigers, but will still advance to this week’s area tournament in Seminole where they will have to win three games in three days — beginning with Thursday afternoon’s 2:30 p.m. area consolation quarterfinal game against Purcell — to make it to state.
The ’Dogs advanced to Saturday night’s with a 73-70 regional championship semifinal victory over regional subhost Broken Bow on Feb. 24.
The Lady Bulldogs won the rubber matchup with NOAA Conference and county rival Sallisaw 37-35 in Saturday afternoon’s Class 4A Regional Tournament consolation finals after surviving 50-47 in overtime Friday afternoon over Hilldale in the consolation semifinals.
The Lady Bulldogs lost their regional championship semifinal 4934 to the sub-host and No. 2 Broken Bow Lady Savages on Feb. 24.
The Lady Bulldogs will meet Chickasha at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Class 4A Area Tournament in Seminole and will need three straight wins on three straight days to make it to state.
In the girls’ consolation finals, Kilah Ellingberg’s lay-up with 15 seconds left in the game broke a 35-all tie for the winning basket for the Lady Bulldogs (17-9).
The Lady Diamonds (19-8) had the last possession, but could not get off the potential game-tying shot.
Two crucial factors doomed the Lady Diamonds on this afternoon. First, they had at least three uncontested lay-ups which the shooters could not finish, missing out on six points. Secondly, they were just 8-of-15 from the free-throw line — leaving as great as seven more points “out on the floor.”
For the game, Kayla Ellingberg scored a game-high 14 points and Kilah Ellingberg added 13 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Emma Fields and Gracie Prewett with four points and Jaydin Dean with two points.
In the boys’ regional championship game, trailing 19-13 with 5:47 left before halftime, the Tigers (22-4), ranked fifth in Class 4A, ended the first half on a 15-9 run. However, Jesse Killing’s 3-point basket with three seconds remaining in the first half knotted the game for the Bulldogs (19-7) at 28-all at the half.
In the second half, the Tigers outscored the ’Dogs 42-38, including building as great as a 14-point lead at 53-39 with 4:43 left to play.
The Bulldogs made a furious rally in the last 4:43, cutting the deficit to three points at 61-58 with 48 seconds remaining but got no closer.
In defeat, Teaguen Collins scored a gamehigh 29 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Kilinc, D.J. Massey and Parker Sevenstar with 10 points each and De-Shawn Willson with six points.
In the girls’ regional consolation semifinals, with the game tied at 42-all at the end of regulation, the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Hornets 5-2 in overtime to get the win.
Hilldale’s Charlee Medley had a wideopen 3-point shot attempt from the top of the key at the end of regulation to possibly give the Lady Hornets (12-14) the win and set up a third game with the Sallisaw Lady Diamonds in the regional consolation finals, but the basketball bounced around the rim and fell out to the left to keep the game tied at 42-all to force overtime.
For the game, Kilah Ellinberg scored a gamehigh 23 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Hardin with 14 points, Kayla Ellingberg with seven points and Fields and Prewett with three points each.
In the boys’ regional championship semifinals, the Bulldogs broke an 11-all tie after a quarter with a 16-11 second period for a 27-22 halftime lead. A 22-18 third quarter upped Muldrow’s advantage to 4940 going into the final period.
The Savages (19-8), ranked 15th in Class 4A, made a fourth-quarter rally as they outscored the ’Dogs 30-24 but came up short — despite a game-high 43 points from Greydon Howell.
For the game, Collins led Muldrow with 20 points, followed by Willson with 16 points, Kilinc and Massey with 13 points each, Sevenstar with six points, Jermauree Palmer with three points and E.J. Zanders with two points.
In the girls’ regional championship semifinals, the Lady Bulldogs led 13-10 after a quarter, but the Lady Savages (25-3) started taking control of the game with a 19-7 second period to take a 29-20 halftime lead, which became a 38-31 lead after three quarters. Broken Bow’s 11-3 final period sealed the deal.
In defeat, Kilah Ellingberg scored 16 points and Hardin added 11 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Dean, Prewett and Kayla Ellingberg with two points apiece and Tae Williams with a free throw.
