Former Roland Ranger and current Arkansas Razorbacks relief pitcher Carson Wiggins is one of two Hogs, with Parker Coil the other Razorback, to be among the 104 pitchers named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Award list. The award is given to the top reliever in college baseball.
The Southeastern Conference led all leagues with 17 players named to the preseason watch list for the Stopper of the Year Award. The institution or conference sports information directors submitted nominees for the preseason watch list.
Wiggins, previously named a preseason All-American by Baseball America, made 14 relief appearances on the mound as a true freshman last year before suffering a season-end-ing injury. The hardthrowing right-hander went 1-1 with a 3.21 earned-run average and 20 strikeouts in 14 innings of work during his promising rookie campaign, logging three saves, good for second most on the Razorbacks, while limiting opposing hitters to a miniscule .152 batting average.
The Razorbacks (2-1 entering Monday afternoon’s game against Tarleton State at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas — the home of Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers — won two of their first three games played — beating Oklahoma State 12-2 in an eight-inning, runrule game last Friday and a 6-5, 11-inning victory over Texas Tech last Sunday. The Hogs lost 5-4 to No. 10 Texas Christian University last Saturday.
Wiggins did not pitch in any of the first three games of the Shriners Children’s College Showdown.
The Razorbacks will entertain Xavier in their home-opening series this weekend at Baum-Walker Stadium, with games at 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
