Muldrow basketball squads open Checotah Crossroads Classic with victories

CHECOTAH — The Muldrow High School basketball teams spent the tail end of last week at the Checotah Crossroads Classic, and both picked up victories.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 43-41 win over Crossings Christian last Wednesday afternoon, then knocked off Tulsa Cascia Hall 44-34 in the championship semifinals last Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs were slated to meet Hilldale in last Friday evening’s championship game.

The ’Dogs also opened 2-0 in the threeday tournament as they won last Wednesday’s opening-round game 59-19 over the Checotah junior varsity, then knocked off Hilldale 61-31 in last Thursday’s championship semifinals.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to meet Eufaula for the tournament championship last Friday night.

In the girls’ openinground win, the Lady Bulldogs (8-6), who trailed 32-30 after three periods, used a fourthquarter rally to get the job done as they outscored the Lady Knights 13-9 in the final period to get the come-frombehind victory.

For the game, London Hardin scored a game-high 20 points to lead Muldrow, followed by Emma Fields with nine points, Kayla Ellingberg with six points, Leni Cox and Jaydin Dean with three points each and Kilah Ellingberg with two points.

There was nothing reported on last Thursday’s championship semifinal game by press time.

In the boys’ openinground victory, the Bulldogs (10-4) put away the game early by jumping out to a 27-5 lead after a quarter and were never threatened from there.

For the game, Jack Pyeatt scored a game-high 14 points and Teaguen Collins added 10 points to lead the ’Dogs, followed by D.J. Massey with seven points Jesse Kilinc with six points, Brody Israel with five points, Jace Riggs and Parker Sevenstar with four points each, Avos Denny with three points and Trey Turpin, Ashton Jones and DeShawn Willson with two points apiece.

There was nothing reported on last Thursday’s championship semifinal game by press time.

The Muldrow teams began last week with road games against Fort Gibson on Jan. 20, where they both suffered losses.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the night with a 59-49 loss to the Lady Tigers, then the Tigers edged the ’Dogs 47-46.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Tigers grabbed an 11-5 lead after a quarter, which became a 24-17 halftime advantage and a 40-32 lead going into the final period.

In defeat, Kilah Ellingberg scored 16 points and Kayla Ellingberg added 13 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs, followed by Gracie Prewett with nine points, Fields with five points and Dean and Tae Williams with three points apiece.

In the boys’ loss, the Tigers rallied from a 3834 third-quarter deficit as they outscored the Bulldogs 13-10 in the final period to get the comefrom- behind victory.

In defeat, Collins scored a game-high 18 points and Kilinc added 12 points to lead the ’Dogs, followed by Sevenstar with six points, Willson with five points, Jermauree Palmer with three points and Massey with two points.
