Roland teams sweep homecoming games from Hugo after splitting with Poteau, sweeping Stilwell
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

The Roland High School basketball teams made it a happy homecoming Saturday afternoon at the Ranger Dome as they swept the Hugo squads as the Runnin’ Rangers corralled the Buffaloes 7340, then the Lady Rangers did likewise to the Lady Buffs in a 68-37 victory.

The homecoming wins came on the heels of a NOAA Conference road split Friday night at Sallisaw as the Runnin’ Rangers handled the Black Diamonds 7948, but the Lady Rangers were stunned 40-33 by the Lady Diamonds.

Last week got underway with a NOAA Conference home sweep of Stilwell as the Lady Rangers won 61-34 over the Lady Indians, then the Runnin’ Rangers took care of the Indians 79-63.

In the boys’ homecoming win over Hugo, the Running Rangers (13-0) jumped out to an 8-0 lead en route to a 29-7 lead after a quarter and a 53-16 lead at halftime.

The Runnin’ Rangers got their lead to as high as 46 points as a 3-point basket by Damonte “Bubba” Owens put Roland ahead 65-19 with 5:43 left in the third quarter. From there, the Roland reserves finished things out.

For the game, Raidyn Knight led all scorers with a game-high 20 points to lead Roland, followed by Owens and Kade Shook with 18 points each, homecoming king Mason Kemp with six points, Landon Fowler, Tae Smith and Hunter Burris each with three points and Cason Perryman with two points.

In the girls’ homecoming victory over Hugo, it was much like the boys’ contest.

The Lady Rangers (83) jumped out to a 13-0 lead on their way to a 21-8 lead after a period, a 44-13 halftime advantage and a 58-20 lead after three quarters.

The Lady Rangers got their lead to as great as 41 points as a 3-point basket and a two-pointer by Adriana Moya put Roland ahead 6827 with 4:43 left in the game.

For the contest, Ryanne Nelke led all scorers with a game-high 32 points to lead Roland, followed by Halle Freeman with 12 points, Lillian Cole with 10 points, homecoming queen Molly Carver with nine points and Moya with five points.

In the boys’ road win over Sallisaw, the Runnin’ Rangers (4-0 in NOAA Conference play) scored the game’s first eight points en route to a 17-7 lead after a quarter, which became a 37-16 halftime advantage and a 60-33 lead after three periods.

The Runnin’ Rangers got their lead to as high as 32 points on a 3-pointer by Bryson Myers with 5:23 remaining in the game.

For the contest, Owens led all scorers with a game-high 22 points to lead Roland, followed by Knight with 15 points, Shook with 13 points, Kemp and Nathan Cheek with six points each, Smith and Myers each with three points, Perryman, Austin Benham and Josh Bower with two points each and Burris with a free throw.

In the girls’ road loss to Sallisaw, it was one of the rougher nights for the Lady Rangers that they had in quite some time.

After a basket by Freeman put the Lady Rangers (3-1 in NOAA Conference play) ahead 4-3 with 4:43 left in the first quarter, the Lady Diamonds end the period with a 6-0 run to take a 9-4 lead after a period en route to a 2210 halftime advantage and a 32-15 lead going into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Rangers tried to rally as they trimmed their deficit to 38-31 on a pair of Nelke free throws with 1:01 left to play, but that was as close as they got.

In defeat, Freeman had a game-high 19 points and Nelke added 10 points to lead Roland, while Cole had four points.

In the boys’ victory over Stilwell, the Runnin’ Rangers led 18-16 after a quarter, 39-32 at the half and 64-49 after three periods.

Owens led all scorers with a game-high 28 points to lead Roland, followed by Knight and Kemp with 16 points each, Fowler with 14 points and Shook with five points.

In the girls’ win over Stilwell, Nelke broke the 1,000-point mark in her prep career.

Leading 13-9 after a quarter, the Lady Rangers outscored the Lady Indians 25-9 in the second period to take a 38-18 advantage at halftime, which became a 57-23 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Nelke scored a gamehigh 23 points to lead Roland, followed by Carver with 16 points, Freeman with 13 points and Cole with nine points.
