Gans Public School District is reaching out to support families who may be affected by the temporary interruption of Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits caused by the ongoing federal government shutdown.
In a letter to families, Superintendent Regina Brannon assured the community that no student will go hungry during this time.
“We understand this disruption may cause uncertainty, worry and financial burden for some members of our school family,” Brannon wrote. “Please know those impacted are not alone; we’re here to help.”
The district announced that all students will continue to receive free breakfast and lunch at school based on their current eligibility status. In addition, each student will receive a bag of dry goods on Friday, November 21.
Families needing additional food assistance can call 2-1-1 to connect with local food banks, pantries and support services. Other community resources include Catholic Charities Food Distribution at 918775-6111, Cherokee Nation Food Distribution Centers in Muldrow and Sallisaw at 918775-1220, and Community Action in Sallisaw.
Counseling services are also available for students who may experience increased anxiety due to the situation.
Oklahomans can learn more about the SNAP benefit interruption by visiting the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) FAQ webpage.
Those in need of help—or those wishing to assist others— can also explore opportunities through the DHS “Be a Neighbor” program.
Brannon emphasized the district’s ongoing commitment to student well-being.
“Our school team is committed to keeping you informed and ensuring every student feels safe, secure and supported,” she concluded.
