Roland Rangers suffer district road loss against Hugo
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

HUGO — The Roland Rangers suffered a 58-38 District 2AI3 road loss to the host Hugo Buffaloes last Friday night.

With the win, the Buffaloes (3-5 overall, 2-3 in district play) and the Rangers (2-6, 2-3) are in a four-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot with Bethel (4-4, 2-3) — which was upset by Roland on Oct. 16 — and Prague (4-4, 2-3), which will be Roland’s Senior Night opponent this Friday night.

The Buffs jumped out to a 15-0 lead after the first quarter and led 27-0 with 7:56 left before halftime.

The Rangers got on the board with 7:35 remaining in the first half on Paul Johnson’s 40yard touchdown run to cut Roland’s deficit to 27-6.

Thanks to Alex Brant’s fumble recovery on the ensuing punt to return the ball to the Rangers, Cason Perryman ran 25 yards for the TD to cut Hugo’s advantage to 2712 with 6:23 left in the first half. Hugo took a 33-12 lead into the locker rooms at the half.

After the Buffaloes scored to take a 40-12 lead with 9:50 left in the third quarter, Kayden Hartt scored on a 30yard touchdown run with 8:37 left in the period to cut the Roland deficit to 39-18. Hugo took a 46-18 lead into the final period.

Roland’s final three TDs of the night were touchdown passes, two by Hartt — a 41-yarder and a 10-yarder to Johnson and a 21-yard TD pass from Brant to Josh Bower. Hartt scored a two-point conversion after his touchdown pass to Johnson.

In defeat, Hartt threw for 159 yards and two TDs but also threw two interceptions, while Johnson caught six passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

The Rangers will celebrate Senior Night with a home district game against the Prague Red Devils at 7 p.m. this Friday.
