Editor’s Note: The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has issued a correction to its preliminary report regarding an October 3 collision in Sequoyah County. The following story reflects the corrected details provided by the investigating trooper.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) has released a corrected version of its report concerning a three-vehicle collision that occurred on the morning of October 3 on Hwy. 59 near County Road E.1050.
According to Trooper Spencer Schmille of Troop C, the crash happened around 8:55 a.m. when three vehicles were traveling along Hwy. 59.
Investigators said a vehicle driven by Bertha Rutherford, 39, of Muldrow, had stopped in the northbound lane, waiting to make a left turn onto County Road E.1050.
Rutherford was yielding to an oncoming southbound vehicle driven by Treavor Waltermire, 24, of Sallisaw, when the northbound vehicle behind her, driven by Gilbert Petree, 72, of Sallisaw, failed to stop in time and rearended Rutherford’s vehicle.
According to the report, debris from the impact struck Waltermire’s southbound vehicle, damaging its windshield.
Rutherford was in-jured in the collision, while Petree and Waltermire were not hurt, according to the corrected report.
All drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Petree reportedly told troopers that he “was looking away from the road” and looked up too late to avoid the collision.
