Two additional arrests were made last Friday in the September shooting of a Sallisaw man who died on Sept. 26 as a result of his injuries.
The Sequoyah County Sheriff ’s Office reported Jensyn Rhodes of Sallisaw and Cody McCormick of Keota, were both taken into custody and charged with accecssory after the fact in the shooting of Joshua D. Mefford, 19.
Because both individuals are Native American, Rhodes (Cherokee) and Mc-Cormick (Choctaw), will be charged through the Cherokee Nation.
According to investigators, both Rhodes and McCormick were present when Robert W. Skelton, 21, of Sallisaw, allegedly shot Mefford in the head and left him lying on the side of a rural road just outside Sallisaw.
A passerby who lives in the area later spotted Mefford and called 911 after reportedly seeing a gray Jaguar SUV fleeing the scene. Mefford was flown to an Arkansas hospital where he was listed in critical condition but later died.
Skelton was initially held as a person of interest in the case and booked into the Sequoyah County Jail the following morning on a count of aggravated assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
Skelton was formally charged with seconddegree murder, unlawful possession of controlled drug (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute, threaten to perform act of violence and carrying firearm unlawfully.
Following an Oct. 1 arraignment, Skelton is now scheduled for a Dec. 3 felony disposition docket in Sequoyah County District Court, according to court records.
Sheriff Larry Lane Jr. said authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting.
