Roland Rangers get first victory of season with district-opening rout of Okmulgee
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

OKMULGEE — The Roland Rangers not only got rid of the zero in the win column, but they opened District 2AI-3 play with a 37-0 rout of the host Okmulgee Bulldogs last Friday night.

The Rangers (1-3 overall, 1-0 in district play) needed only one play to dent the scoreboard as after the opening kickoff, Paul Johnson rambled 86 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion pass play failed, keeping the Rangers ahead 6-0 with 11:30 left in the first quarter.

After Josh Bower’s 39-yard interception return to put the Rangers in business at the Okmulgee 21-yard line, Alex Brant threw a 22yard TD pass to Derrick Allen with 1:30 remaining in the period. The two-point conversion failed, but the Rangers led 12-0 after a quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the Rangers stopped the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-1) on downs at the Roland 32-yard line.

Two plays and 68 yards later, Bower caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Brant. The two-point conversion failed, but the Rangers increased their advantage to 18-0 with 5:57 left before halftime.

The Roland defense capped the first half in style as Trevor Lasiter returned a fumble 60 yards to paydirt with 2:34 remaining in the first half. Although the two-point conversion was no good, the Rangers led 24-0 at halftime.

Johnson scored his second TD of the night as he caught Brant’s third touchdown pass of the game, this one a 66-yarder with 8:36 left in the third quarter. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, but the Rangers were well in control with a 30-0 lead after three quarters.

The game’s final score was a 30-yard TD pass from Brant to Uriah Phillips with 11:02 left to play. Kayden Hartt hit the extra point.

Brant passed for 192 yards and three touchdowns, while Johnson had 91 yards rushing and a TD and one 66yard touchdown pass.

The Rangers amassed 334 yards of offense to 77 yards for the ’Dogs.

The Rangers will return home to meet the Kiefer Trojans at 7 p.m. this Friday at Ranger Stadium.
