The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the State Medical Examiner’s Office are still trying to piece together why an inmate at the Sequoyah County Jail died in her cell late last week.
At about 2:30 a.m. last Friday, jail staff discovered Honesty Owens, 43, unresponsive in her cell. Staff immediately initiated emergency procedures and contacted emergency medical services.
There were no apparent signs of injury or trauma. Owens had been in custody for about three weeks.
The OSBI and the State Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene and have assumed responsibility for the investigation.
“The jail staff did an outstanding job,” Sequoyah County Sheriff Larry Lane said of the staff’s response.
Lane said preliminary findings from the medical ex- aminer indicated the death stemmed from natural causes.
The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.
No further details are being released at this time as the investigation continues.
