Roland School Board recognizes longtime member
Approves contracts, increase in meal prices
By AMIE CATO-REMER EDITOR,

The Roland Board of Education met in regular session on September 8, approving a slate of items ranging from meal price adjustments and contracts to policy updates and reports, while also honoring one of its longest-serving members.

Among the first actions, the board approved the Internal Activities Committee for the 2025–26 school year and voted to meet Oklahoma State Department of Education requirements using instructional hours rather than calendar days.

Adult and staff meal prices were increased slightly, with breakfast rising from $2.37 to $2.46 and lunch from $4.97 to $5.14. The board also approved the district’s Certificate of Authority, an extra duty contract for Theresa Davis, and a cooperative agreement with Moffett Public Schools for the alternative education program.

Members gave unanimous approval to continue the district’s participation agreement with the Oklahoma State Department of Education and Public Consulting Group, Inc. They also accepted a service agreement with the Sequoyah County Commissioners and renewed a contract with Precision Drug Screening.

In other business, the board adopted several updated policies covering data management, employment practices, teacher dress and grooming, special education, student transfers, and student discipline. The district’s Sudden Cardiac Arrest Plan and communications platforms were also approved, along with the 2023-24 Drop Out Report.

Financial matters dominated part of the meeting, with the board approving encumbrances totaling more than $415,000 from the General Fund, along with payroll, building fund, co-op fund, sinking fund, and bond fund expenditures.

In new business, members accepted the resignation of Monica King.

Superintendent Lori Wiggins highlighted several updates during her report, noting that the district’s first football game and related procedures went smoothly.

She announced that longtime board member Charles Howard was honored at the Oklahoma State School Boards Association (OSSBA) conference with the Distinguished Service Award for more than 45 years of service on the Roland Board of Education.

She also reported that the middle school gym renovation is nearly complete and back in use for both classes and athletics, with the meeting adjourning at 7:35 p.m.

This news story is based on the unofficial minutes from the board meeting and could be in error if the minutes are changed prior to adoption.
