Central Lady Tigers beat Vian, Hulbert, lose four games in I-40 Shootout
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

It was a tale of two partial weeks for the Central Lady Tigers softball team last week.

The first half of the week could not have gone any better as they tamed the Vian Lady Wolverines 20-5 on Sept. 8 at Vian’s Armstrong Park, then won their first District 2A-12 game of the season as they blanked the Hulbert Lady Riders 7-0 on Sept. 9 at home.

However, when they entered the Interstate 40 Shootout, which took place Thursday at Central High School and Saturday in Roland, they went winless.

On Thursday, the Lady Tigers fell 6-2 to Gore and 11-2 to Muldrow on their home field, then lost 6-1 to Roland and 9-1 to Checotah on Saturday in Roland.

In the win over Vian, trailing 4-2 after two innings, the Lady Tigers (3-14) erupted for 13 runs in the third inning to take a 15-4 lead. A five-run fourth inning put the game into runrule status.

For the game, Charlie Petree was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and a run scored, Brianna Taylor was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Brenleigh Allen was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI, Sadie Huff was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Addison Howard doubled with three RBIs and three runs scored and Alyvia Warner doubled with three RBIs and a run scored for Central. Howard (39) got the win, tossing a four-inning five-hitter.

In the district victory over Hulbert, Howard threw a five-hitter with four strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers broke a scoreless tie with a four-run third inning and single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

For the game, Warner was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Howard was 3-for-3 with a double and a run batted in, Jhaselyn Gonzalez was 2-for-4, Allen was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Petree was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Zoey Lattimore was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored for the Lady Tigers (1-4 in district play).

In the I-40 Shootout loss to Gore, the Lady Pirates scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, then doubled their lead to 6-0 with a three-run fifth inning. The Lady Tigers scored twice in the sixth inning, but the rally fell short.

In defeat, Warner was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, Petree and Keeley Poindexter each singled with an RBI and Taylor singled for Central.

Howard suffered the loss, despite getting two strikeouts in six innings.

In the I-40 Shootout loss to Muldrow, the Lady Bulldogs put away the game early with a three-run first inning and a pair of four-run innings in the second and third innings for an 11-0 lead. The Lady Tigers scored twice in the third inning but got no closer.

In defeat, Petree singled with an RBI, Warner singled and scored once and Howard and Poindexter each singled for Central.

Howard took the loss, although she recorded two strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Rylie Wilson went the rest of the way.

In the I-40 Shootout loss to Roland, the Lady Rangers scored once in the first inning and three runs in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. The Lady Tigers scored once in the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 4-1 after four innings but got no closer.

In defeat, Gonzalez tripled and scored once, Poindexter singled with an RBI and Warner, Taylor, Howard and Lattimore each singled for Central. Howard took the loss.

In the I-40 Shootout loss to Checotah, Checotah pitcher Shaelynn Casey three-hit the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Wildcats scored three runs in the first inning, once in the second inning and four runs in the third inning for an 8-0 lead. Lily Kutil’s RBI single in the fourth inning scored Poindexter for Central’s only run.

In defeat, Kutil hit an RBI single, Poindexter singled and scored once and Petree singled.

Howard took the loss, going the first three innings. Petree pitched the fourth inning, and Wilson got the final out.

Central’s road game Monday at Muldrow was canceled.
