Scoffers Will Come in the Last Days
Commentary
August 19, 2025
Scoffers Will Come in the Last Days
By Shirley R. Watts

“Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,” II Peter 3 “Woe to them!” (Jude 11)

A “scoffer?” It is one who “stresses insolence, disrespect” Biblically it is someone who treats lightly what ought to be taken seriously. In our case the scoffer is an unbeliever! They scoff the God of the Word! They scoff the Word of God. They hate authority! They do not want to change their lifestyle. The Word of God convicts of sin and man hates that. They want to live in sin, “lust of the flesh, eye and pride of life.” (I John 2:16). They scoff at the doctrines of judgment… that Jesus Christ will return.

“These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain advantage” (Jude 16). Today they scoff at the Cross… the blood… shed for their sin. They scoff the Christian that can share the gospel with them. They scoff the Birth of Christ, who came in the flesh to die in their place. They scoff at The Ten Commandments which should be taken very seriously. They scoff the Church and mock saying… ”Where is the promise of His coming? (II Peter 3:4).

Scoffers have been around since the Garden. It seems today that they are coming out of the woodwork and are brazenly arrogant about it. They multiply daily. Satan’s time is short and he is on the move in a way we have not seen and will get worse.

Scoffers are unbelievers in Jesus Christ. “Woe to them!” (Jude 11). They to deny God and lead others to also deny Him and that is a very dangerous path…a deadly path! You can see the sly, slick, slimy serpent seeking to devour sinners.

One day soon “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him” (Jude 14-15).

Christians, we are “His saints!” Amen! Praise the Lord!

Scoffing at God will not change anything! Scoffers, you should be thankful to God that He is longsuffering, “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9).

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (II Peter 3:10).

God does not answer to man for anything. He will do what He says and He will do it on His time. He has a plan and is working His Plan.

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor? ‘Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him? For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever” Amen. (Romans 11:3336).

Christians, let us not fret over the scoffers, but pray that God will be glorified through us in our daily walk and we will be the witness He has called us to be. Stand firm in your faith! Teach your kids the truth. Memorize and live The Ten Commandments. Place them in your home.

“Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God,” tNevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells” (II Peter 3:11-13) Christians: Jesus will return! Keep this in your mind, share it and your faith will grow! Praise Him constantly!

Unbelievers, If you are scoffing at God, His Word, His Son and His saints, repent and trust Him. If not…woe to you.
