A man wanted in connection with an armed robbery and domestic battery in Fort Smith, Ark. is now in custody after being apprehended last week across the state line in Oklahoma.
Kenneth M. Byrd, 28, of Ozark, Ark. was arrested by Roland Police after a tip from a local resident who reported seeing him leaving the Cherokee Casino and Hotel around 8 a.m. According to police, Byrd was later found riding a bicycle along Highway 64, where he initially attempted to mislead officers by providing a false identity.
“He didn’t want to give us his name, so there was an obstruction charge that was given to him for lying about his name,” Roland Police Assistant Chief Steven Edwards said. Byrd allegedly told of-ficers his name was “Bobby,” but officers were able to identify him using a photo shared by the Fort Smith Police Department (FSPD).
Byrd is suspected of involvement in a violent incident that occurred the morning of June 4 at an apartment on Kinkead Avenue in Fort Smith. According to FSPD, the victim sustained multiple injuries consistent with being struck with a handgun. Byrd was allegedly armed with a revolver at the time of the assault and considered dangerous.
Following his arrest, Byrd was taken to the Roland Police Department, where he is currently being held while awaiting an interview with Fort Smith investigators. Afterward, he will be transferred to the Sequoyah County Detention Center where he will remain pending prosecution for obstruction of justice and eventually be extradited to Arkansas to face charges of domestic battery and armed robbery.
Sequoyah County court records show that no formal charges have been filed against Byrd as of press time.
