MANGUM — The Central Tigers baseball team was on the cusp of another Class 2A State Tournament berth, but it ended up in heartbreak.
The Tigers, who opened last week’s Class 2A-II Regional Tournament with a 13-1 fourinning, run-rule win over the Haskell Haymakers and a 5-4 win over the host Mangum Tigers on Thursday, when it came down to a battle of Tigers for the regional championship and a trip to this week’s Class 2A-II State Tournament, it was the host Tigers who prevailed.
Mangum edged Central 2-1 in the first regional title game on Friday, then Mangum run-ruled Central 10-0 in four innings in Saturday’s winner-take-all game.
Last week started with a 14-1 road loss to the Panama Razorbacks on May 5 in Panama.
The Tigers finished the season with a record of 13-18. In the regionaltournament win over Haskell, Ryker Miller threw four-inning three-hitter with four strikeouts.
The Tigers put away the game early as they scored five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning for a 9-0 lead. A four-run fourth inning put the game into runrule status.
For the contest, Aidan Sainer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Kage Poindexter was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in and Kiefer Bailey doubled with two runs scored for Central.
In the regional-tournament victory over Mangum, Hardy Buzzard scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to break a 4-all tie.
For the game, Bailey was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Central.
Buzzard got the win, going all seven innings with three strikeouts.
In the first regional title game, Mangum scored a run in the fifth inning to break a 1-all tie.
In defeat, Sainer was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Waylen Campbell was 2-for-3 and Paitton Merrill doubled for Central.
Bailey was the hardluck loser, going six innings with four Ks.
In the winner-takeall regional championship game, Mangum pitcher Beau Rogers threw a four-inning nohitter with two strikeouts.
Mangum scored three runs in the first inning and five runs in the second inning for an 8-0 lead. A two-run fourth inning put the game into run-rule status.
Campbell took the loss, going the first 1.2 innings. Sainer went the final two innings with two strikeouts.
