Muldrow pitcher strikes out 16 Poteau batters in Bulldogs’ first district win of season
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

The Muldrow Bulldogs finally got their first District 4A-8 win of the season as they defeated the Poteau Pirates 2-0 in eighth innings on April 14 at Town Creek Park in Poteau.

Senior pitcher Jonah Claborn (2-5) went the entire eight innings with 16 strikeouts and threw a two-hitter.

The Bulldogs (5-19 overall 1-11 in district play) broke the scoreless deadlock on Brody Israel’s RBI double and a wild pitch in the eighth inning.

For the game, Hayden McKinster was 2-for-4, while Israel had an RBI double for Muldrow.

However, the rest of the week was rough for the ’Dogs as they lost their three remaining games, losing the home district match-up to Poteau by a score of 4-3 on April 15, then losing 14-6 in five innings at Fort Gibson on Thursday and 10-0 in five innings at Sallisaw on Good Friday afternoon on “The Turf of Dreams.” The Sallisaw road game originally was scheduled for March 4 but had to be postponed due to the turf not being able to play a game on it as it was still being put down.

In the home loss to Poteau, the Pirates rallied from 3-0 deficit with a four-run sixth inning.

In defeat, Claborn was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Jackson Phillips was 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run batted in and Israel was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Muldrow.

Jace Prewett (1-4) suffered the loss, despite getting nine strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Jack Rhodes went the final 1.1 innings.

In the loss to Fort Gibson, the Tigers rallied from a 6-5 secondinning deficit with a three three-run innings in the second, third and fifth innings — with the latter rally putting the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Phillips was 3-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored, Claborn was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Jace Prewett was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Rhodes was 2-for-3 for Muldrow.

McKinster (1-5) suffered the loss, despite two strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Rhodes went the final two innings with three Ks.

In the loss to Sallisaw, the Sallisaw duo of Creed Nelson and Dagan Grizzle combined to no-hit the Bulldogs, only facing the minimum of 15 batters in five innings. The only runner that got on was Wyatt Prewett as he led off the game with a walk but was retired in a 3-unassisted double play at Grizzle caught a Texas-blooper off the bat of Claborn near first base for the first out, then beat Prewett to the bag as the Muldrow baserunner had taken off on a hit-and-run play.

Israel (1-2) suffered the loss, going the first 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. The Black Diamonds got to him as they sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring six of them.
