Rough opening week baseball for Roland Rangers
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

It was a rough opening week of baseball for the Roland Rangers as they lost all three games.

In the season opener on March 17, the Rangers lost their District 3A-8 road opener 17-1 to the host Spiro Bulldogs, who spoiled the Rangers’ home opener and first home district game of the season with a 10-3 victory on March 18.

On Thursday, the Charleston (Ark.) Tigers came across the border and routed the Rangers 21-0.

In the first loss to Spiro, after the Rangers (0-3 overall, 0-2 in district play) scored once in the opening inning, the ’Dogs scored five runs in the first inning, once in the second inning and 11 runs in the third inning for a 17-1 lead to put the game into run-rule status.

In defeat, Alex Brant doubled and scored the only run, while Colton Peters, Hunter Burris, Raesean Perryman and Channing McKinney all singled for Roland.

Peters (0-1) took the loss, going 2.1 innings with a strikeout. Derrick Allen went the final 1.2 innings with three Ks.

In the second loss to Spiro, the Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning, once in the third inning, twice in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth inning and once in the sixth inning for a 9-0 lead.

The Rangers scored twice in their half of the sixth inning on a pair of RBI grounders by Brant and McKinney to cut their deficit to 9-2 but got no closer.

In defeat, Avery Moya doubled and scored once, Perryman doubled and Rickey Watts doubled for Roland.

Brant (0-1) suffered the loss, despite striking out nine batters in 4.1 innings. Moya went the final 2.2 innings with five Ks.

In the loss to Charleston, the Tigers put away the game with a 12-run first inning.

In defeat, Lucas Younger doubled and Brant and Moya each singled for Roland’s three hits.

Brett Mouldin (0-1) suffered the loss, only able to last two-thirds of an inning. Burris went the final 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.
