Gans girls go 1-3 last week; Grizzlies suffer four losses
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

It was a rough week of basketball last week for the Gans High School teams as they went a combined 1-7.

The only win last week came compliments of the Lady Grizzlies, who defeated Cameron 30-23 on Friday night in Cameron after losing 49-20 to Cave Springs on Feb. 3 in Bunch, 5215 to Central on Thursday night and 42-21 to Webbers Falls on Feb. 4 — the latter two games at Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse.

It was a rougher week for the Grizzlies as they lost all four games played last week as they still seek win No. 1 for the 2024-25 season. The Grizzlies lost 59-25 to Cave Springs Feb. 3 in Bunch, fell 41-22 to Webbers Falls on Feb. 4 at home, lost 60-23 to Central on Thursday night at home and fell 55-26 to Cameron on Friday night in Cameron.

In the girls’ win over Cameron, the Lady Grizzlies (4-18) led 7-4 after a quarter after a quarter, 16-9 at the break and 18-11 after three periods.

Sophie Pulice scored a game-high 11 points to lead Gans, followed by Skylyn Bird with eight points, Maddie Freeman with six points and K’Cee Osborn with five points.

In the girls’ loss to Cave Springs, the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 12-7 lead after a quarter en route to a 22-7 halftime advantage as they blanked the Lady Grizzlies 10-0 in the second period. A 13-5 third quarter upped the Cave Springs lead to 35-12 entering the final period.

In defeat, Pulice led the Lady Grizzlies with five points, followed by Addy Bibbs with four points, Osborn with three points and Bird, Freeman, MaKinzie Kimble and Makenzy Hunter with two points apiece.

In the girls’ loss to Webbers Falls, the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 14-4 lead after a quarter en route to a 23-8 halftime advantage and a 32-14 lead after three quarters.

In defeat, Pulice led the Lady Warriors (1-7 in Riverside Conference play) with eight points, followed by Bird with five points and Osborn, Hunter, Bibbs and Brighton Dorsey with two points apiece.

In the girls’ loss to Central, the Lady Tigers raced out to a 21-3 lead after a period and never looked back.

In defeat, Pulice led Gans with six points, followed by Aaliyah Taylor with three points, Bird and Dorsey with two points each and Freeman and Amarys White with a free throw apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Cave Springs, the Hornets stung the Grizzlies 17-4 in the opening period en route to a 27-19 halftime advantage and a 42-25 lead going into the fourth quarter — a period in which the Hornets outscored the Grizzlies 17-0.

In defeat, Austin Hines led the Grizzlies (0-21) with nine points, followed by Preston Bennett with four points, Cristian Gaona and Jarrett Frazier-Barret with three points each and Jessie Phillips, Aiden Garcia and Lucas Flute with two points apiece.

In the boys’ loss to Webbers Falls, the Warriors jumped out to a 15-9 lead after a period, which became a 25-12 advantage at halftime and a 37-20 lead after three quarters.
