Roland boys undefeated, Lady Rangers winless during opening week of season
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor

The Roland High School basketball teams split their two matchups during the opening week of the season last week.

The Runnin’ Rangers were undefeated, beating the Sequoyah-Tahlequah Indians 6157 on Dec. 3 in Tahlequah, then handling the Quinton Savages 77-35 Friday night at Quinton Event Center.

However, it was a rough start to the season for the Lady Rangers, who lost 59-44 to Sequoyah- Tahlequah and 48-39 to Quinton.

In the Roland boys’ win over Sequoyah-Tahlequah, The Running’ Rangers (2-0) led 11-9 after a quarter, 31-23 at halftime and 50-37 after three periods, but the Indians made things interesting as they outscored Roland 20-11 in the fourth quarter but the rally fell short.

For the game, Damonte Owens led Roland with 22 points, followed by Landon Fowler and Mason Kemp each scoring 10 points, Kade Shook with nine points, Buck Triplett with five points, Kayden Hartt with three points and Raesean Perryman with two points.

In the Roland boys’ victory over Quinton, the Runnin’ Rangers put away the game early, taking a 20-2 lead after a quarter and were never headed.

For the game, Owens led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, followed by Kayden Hartt, Nate Criswell and Hunter Burris with eight points each, Triplett and Kemp each with seven points, Shook with five points, Fowler and Camren Hartt with four points each, Perryman and Brady Edmondson each with three points and Nathan Cheek with a free throw.

In the Roland girls’ loss to Sequoyah-Tahlequah, the Lady Indians jumped out to a 12-7 lead after a quarter en route to a 24-19 halftime advantage and a 45-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In defeat, Ryanne Nelke scored a gamehigh 15 points and Haven Freeman added 12 points to lead Roland, followed by Halle Freeman and Molly Carver with seven points each, Lilly Cole with four points and Ari Acevedo with a free throw.

In the Roland girls’ loss to Quinton, the Lady Rangers (0-2) led 14-6 after a quarter, but the Lady Savages used a 22-8 second period to take a 28-22 halftime lead en route to a 39-30 third-quarter advantage.

In defeat, Haven Freeman led all scorers with a game-high 18 points for Roland, followed by Halle Freeman with 10 points, Nelke with seven points and Cole with four points.
