Roland Rangers end up sixth in Central Tiger Shootout
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor,

The Roland Rangers ended up in sixth place in the 2024 Central Tiger Shootout, which took place Thursday through Saturday at Central High School.

The Rangers lost Saturday afternoon’s consolation finals 2-1 to Stilwell after losing Thursday’s openinground game 5-2 to Hulbert but beating Vian 4-3 in eight innings in Friday afternoon’s consolation semifinals.

The Rangers began the week by splitting their April 9 home district doubleheader against Heavener, winning the opener 6-0 but losing the nightcap 10-2.

In Saturday’s consolation finals, Arkansas signee Carson Wiggins hit a two-out, RBI single to score Paden Pitts to make it 1-0 after three innings, but the Indians scored twice in the sixth inning to snatch away the win.

In defeat, Pitts was 2-for-3 with a double, Wiggins hit an RBI single and Ashton Peters singled for the Rangers.

Pitts (3-2) was the hard-luck loser as he went all seven innings with nine Ks.

In Friday’s consolation semifinals win over Vian, the Rangers rallied from a 3-0 deficit with a three-run sixth inning to tie the game at 3-all, then win it in walkoff fashion on Trenton Ross’ suicide-squeeze bunt scoring Avery Moya with the gamewining run with one out in the eighth inning.

For the game, Alex Brant was 2-for-4 with a double, Wiggins was 2-for-4 and Ross was 2-for-4 with the gamewinning RBI.

Pitts got the win in relief, going the final 1.1 innings. Colton Peters started and went the first 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts.

In Roland’s openinground loss to Hulbert, the Riders broke a 2-all tie with three-run sixth inning.

In defeat, Pitts had Roland’s only hit.

Brant (2-4) suffered the loss, going six innings with six Ks. Peters went the final inning.

In Roland’s district win over Heavener, Wiggins (2-2) got the win as he fanned 16 Wolves in six innings. Alex Brant pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout.

The Rangers (8-13 overall, 3-7 in district play) scored once in the first inning, twice in the second inning, once in the third inning and twice in the fourth inning.

For the game, Brant was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Wiggins aided his own cause by going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two runs batted in, Ross was 2-for-2 and Drew Simpson doubled and scored once for Roland.

In the nightcap in which the Wolves were home, the Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Wolves scored five runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. A three-run fifth inning put the game into runrule status.

In defeat, Colton Peters was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Roland.

Ashton Peters (1-3) took the loss, despite going four innings with eight Ks. Colton Peters got the last two outs, one of which came by strikeout.

The Rangers were slated to play district foe Westville there on Monday and at home on Tuesday.
