Muldrow softball team sweeps Sallisaw before reaching Checotah Tournament championship semifinals

The Muldrow Lady Bulldogs softball team started the week with a home sweep of Sallisaw by scores of 9-6 and 13-3 in four innings on April 9 before they ended up making the Checotah Tournament championship semifinals on Thursday as they lost 9-0 to Eufaula in the championship semifinals after opening with a 4-3 win over Roland, a 6-3 victory over Fort Gibson and a 12-4 loss to Oktaha.

The Lady Bulldogs ended the week by splitting their games in Friday’s road three-way at Roland, winning 4-1 over the Lady Rangers but falling 5-3 to the Vian Lady Wolverines.

In the Game 1 win over Sallisaw, the Lady Bulldogs (9-9), who trailed 5-0, started the comeback with a tworun first inning and a five-run third inning to take the lead for good at 7-5.

For the game, Cailey Grinstead doubled with a run batted in and two runs scored, Jaydin Dean hit an RBI double with two RBI and scored twice and Kaira Qualls doubled with two RBIs and a run scored for Muldrow. Grinstead (99) got the win.

In the Game 2 victory over Sallisaw, the Lady Bulldogs once more fell behind early, trailing 3-0 in the first inning, but rallied for their second comeback victory of the evening.

Grinstead’s RBI single and Dean’s two-run triple in the home half of the opening inning tied the game a 3-all.

Muldrow took the lead for good in the second inning as Kaydance Young’s two-out, threerun double put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 6-3 after two innings.

For the game, Dean was 3-for-3 with with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored, Grinstead was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, Amaya Duran doubled with two runs scored and an RBI and Young hit a three-RBI double for Muldrow. Grinstead got the win.

In the tournament win over Roland, a two-run rally in the sixth inning lifted the Lady Bulldogs as Ashley Price’s RBI single tied the game at 3-all, then Danica Tune’s sacrifice fly scored Ryah Keenan with the gamewinning run.

For the game, Price was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Tune was 2-for-4 with a triple, the game-winning sacrifice fly and a run scored, Young was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Grinstead was 2-for-3 for Muldrow. Grinstead got the win.

In the tournament victory over Fort Gibson, after the Lady Tigers cut their deficit to 2-1 after an inning, the Lady Bulldogs scored three runs in the third inning for a 5-1 lead to take control the game.

For the contest, Young was 2-for-3 with a double, a solo homer and three runs scored, Tune doubled and scored and Dean doubled with two RBIs. Grinstead got the win.

In the tournament loss to Oktaha, the Lady Tigers clawed their way to a 12-0 lead by the third inning. Muldrow got three runs in the third inning and a run in the fifth inning.

In defeat, Young doubled with an RBI, while Price singled with an RBI and a run scored. Grinstead took the loss.

In the tournament championship semifinals loss to Eufaula, the Lady Bulldogs only mustered four hits, a single apiece by Amaya Duran, Amarie Duran, Kaira Qualls and Heidi McGuire. Grinstead took the loss.

In Friday’s win over Roland, the Lady Bulldogs broke a 1-all tie with a three-run sixth inning.

For the game, Tune was 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, Grinstead was 3-for-3, Ashley Price was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Young doubled with two RBIs and a run scored for Muldrow. Grinstead got the win.

In Friday’s loss to Vian, the Lady Wolverines used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead for good at 4-1. The Lady Bulldogs scored once in the seventh inning on Tune’s insidethe- park homer to cut the deficit to 5-3 but got no closer.

In defeat, Tune was 2-for-4 with an insidethe- park home run and two RBIs, Aubrey Luttrell and Eve Keenan were each 2-for-3 and Price tripled with an RBI and a run scored for Muldrow. Grinstead took the loss.

The Lady Bulldogs were slated to play backto- back games with Spiro, at home Monday and at Spiro on Tuesday, then will begin postseason play with the Class 5A District Tournament at Stilwell on Thursday with a 11:15 a.m. game against Eufaula. Should the Lady Bulldogs win the district tournament, they will advance to next week’s Class 5A Regional Tournament at a site and time to be determined.
