Moffett basketball teams win ORES State Tournament

Brushy, Belfonte, Liberty teams bow out in regional/area tournament

SHAWNEE — The Moffett Lady Wildcats and ’Cats swept the Organization of Rural Elementary Schools (ORES) Division II State Tournament titles Saturday at North Rock Creek High School.

The Lady Wildcats defeated Zion 44-31 in Saturday morning’s state finals after beating Anderson 45-28 on in Thursday afternoon’s state quarterfinal in Dale and defeating Darlington 54-35 in Friday night’s state semifinals in Dale.

The Lady Wildcats reached the state tournament by winning the regional/area tournament at Maryetta School the weekend before as they beat Brushy 43-11 and Zion 47-30.

The Wildcats made it a Moffett sweep in the state title games as they handled Hodgen 45-25 Saturday afternoon at North Rock Creek High School.

The ’Cats got to the state championship by posting a 63-12 rout of Keystone in Thursday night’s state quarterfinals in Dale and a 64-32 victory over Denison in Friday night’s state semifinals in Dale.

Just like the Lady Wildcats, the Wildcats went through their regional/ area tournament undefeated the prior weekend at Maryetta School. The ’Cats defeated Brushy 54-26 and Zion 57-44.

The three other eastern Sequoyah County ORES schools were eliminated in their respective regional/area tournament.

After losing to Moffett in the regional/area tournament at Maryetta School, the Brushy Lady Mountaineers lost in the consolation finals 50-14 to Zion after eliminating Liberty 44-30. Liberty’s girls opened with a 5614 loss to Zion.

The Brushy Mountaineers, after losing to Moffett run the regional/ area tournament, were eliminated 34-25 by Liberty, which opened with a 53-31 loss to Zion. Liberty’s boys lost in the consolation finals 57-18 to Zion.

In Division IV, Belfonte’s girls suffered a 36-14 loss to Fanshawe and a 38-22 setback against Lowrey.

The Belfonte boys suffered a 32-21 loss to Lowrey and a 55-11 setback to Whitefield in Division IV.
