Central basketball teams sweep over Vian, split with Keys
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor,

The Central High School basketball teams got their second straight sweep of Vian as they got a pair of road wins on Jan. 30 at Vian’s B.J. Traw Gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers began the night with a 5831 win over the Lady Wolverines, then the Tigers completed the Central sweep of Vian for the second time in a week with a 58-50 victory over the Wolverines.

On Friday night in Park Hill, the Central squads got a road split against Keys. The Lady Tigers beat the Lady Cougars 40-29, but the Cougars got the split by defeating the Tigers 6356.

In the girls’ game at Vian, the Lady Tigers (17-3) jumped out to a 10-2 lead after a quarter, which became a 22-14 halftime advantage and a 41-20 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Cambree Bair scored a gamehigh 22 points to lead Central, followed by Koda Robbins with six points, Brianna Taylor, Hadlie Woods and Haley Cheek with five points each, Ayrland Jiles with four points, Gracie Thompson, Ryleigh Pierce, Paris Campbell, Cheyenne Busch and Alyssa Harris each with two points and Alyvia Warner with a free throw.

In the boys’ contest at Vian, it didn’t take three overtimes to decide it as on Jan. 23 — four quarters were enough this time.

The Tigers (13-8) broke a 12-all tie after a period with a 16-14 second quarter for a 28-26 halftime lead. A 20-10 third period for Central upped its advantage to 48-36 entering the fourth quarter.

For the game, Jace Mendenhall led all scorers with a game-high 25 points, followed by Isaac Rogers with nine points, Aiden Sainer with seven points, Cade Tucker and Devon Baggs with six points each and Joseph Lee with five points.

In the girls’ win over Keys, the Lady Tigers led 10-8 after a quarter, 19-15 at halftime and 29-25 after three periods.

For the game, Bair scored a game-high 12 points and Cheek added 11 points to lead Central, followed by Robbins with eight points, Woods with six points and Jiles with three points.

In the boys’ loss to Keys, the Cougars jumped out to an 18-7 lead after a period, but the Tigers used a 17-13 second quarter to cut their deficit to 31-24 at halftime. However, the Cougars outscored the Tigers 23-14 in the third quarter to take a 54-43 advantage into the final period.

In defeat, Baggs scored 13 points and Tucker added 12 points to lead Central, followed by Sainer with seven points, Mendenhall with six points, Lee with five points, Braxin Goodson with four points and Hardy Buzzard and Rogers with two points apiece.
