Roland squads get NOAA Conference home sweeps over Sallisaw, Poteau
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor,

It was a perfect week for the Roland High School basketball teams as they got a pair of home NOAA Conference sweeps at the Ranger Dome against Sallisaw on Jan. 23 and Poteau on Friday night.

The week started with the Lady Rangers downing the Lady Diamonds 42-28, then the Running Rangers defeated the Black Diamonds 60-41.

Then, on Friday night, the Lady Rangers made the Lady Pirates walk the plank in a 51-38 victory, which was followed by the Running Rangers taking care of the Pirates 74-37.

In the Roland girls’ win over Sallisaw, thanks to a 3-pointer by Hannah Palmer, the Lady Diamonds got the game tied once more at 14-all with 4:31 left before halftime. That would be as close as Sallisaw got.

The Lady Rangers (153 overall, 5-2 in NOAA Conference play) ended the first half on a 10-0 run, capped by a Lilly Medicine Bird free throw with 38 second left, to put Roland ahead 23-14 at halftime.

Roland got its advantage to as great as 19 points at 34-15 on a pair of Ryanne Nelke free throws with 3:15 left in the third quarter.

For the game, Haven Freeman scored a game-high 15 points and Halle Freeman added 10 points to lead Roland, followed by Nelke with eight points, Kynlei Earnhart with six points and Medicine Bird with three points.

In the Roland boys’ victory over Sallisaw, the Running Rangers (17-1, 7-0) took a 36-30 lead into the final period, in which Roland outscored Sallisaw 24-11 to close out the game.

For the game, Carson Wiggins scored a game-high 24 points to lead Roland, followed by DaVohn Hall with 13 points, Kade Shook with seven points, Paul Johnson with six points, Cason Perryman with four points and Buck Triplett and Mason Kemp with three points apiece.

In the Roland girls’ victory over Poteau, the Lady Rangers doubled the Lady Pirates 14-7 in the first quarter en route to a 27-16 halftime advantage and a 35-23 lead going into the final period.

For the game, Nelke shared game-high honors with Poteau’s Emma Hackler with 16 points and Medicine Bird added 14 points to lead Roland, followed by Earnhart with eight points, Halle Freeman with seven points, Haven Freeman with four points and Jazzlyn Teehee with two points.

In the Roland boys’ win over Poteau, the Running Rangers enjoyed a 32-27 halftime lead, but they put away the game with a 42-10 second half.

For the contest, Hall led all scorers with a game-high 32 points to lead Roland, followed by Wiggins with 14 points, Triplett with six points, Shook and Nate Criswell with four points each, Kemp and D.J.
