Gans basketball teams split home games with Gore, McCurtain

The Gans High School basketball teams split a pair of home games last week at Bryant “Big Country” Reeves Fieldhouse.

The Gans squads split their Thursday night home games with county rival Gore as the Lady Grizzlies scored late to get a 35-34 win over the Lady Pirates, but the Grizzlies lost the nightcap 63-33 to the Pirates.

On Jan. 9, it was reversed as the Grizzlies hung on to down the McCurtain Bulldogs 6054, but the Lady Bulldogs tamed the Lady Grizzlies 61-26.

In the girls’ win over Gore, Melania Paniagua’s lay-up with seven seconds left to play in the game proved to be the game-winning basket.

For the game, Paniagua led Gans with 13 points, followed by Brianna Burris with eight points, Aaliyah Taylor with six points, Reina Gaona with five points and Stevie Pratt with three points.

In the girls’ loss to McCurtain, the Lady Bulldogs had an 11-9 lead after a quarter, but they put away the game with a 21-5 second period to up their advantage to 38-14 at halftime. A 17-5 third quarter put McCurtain ahead 55-19 going into the final period.

In defeat, Burris led the Lady Grizzlies (4-8) with seven points, followed by Paniagua with six points, Gaona with five points, K’Cee Osburn with three points, ratt and Amerys White with two points each and Taylor with a free throw.

In the boys’ win over McCurtain, the Grizzlies (4-7) led 16-15 after a period, but a 22-10 second quarter upped the Gans advantage to 38-25 at halftime. The Bulldogs outscored the Grizzlies 29-22 in the second half, but their rally fell short.

For the game, Josh Brunk led Gans with a game-high 26 points, followed by Ashton Langston with 14 points, Mayson Clifton with eight points, Nakota White with six points, Gunner Vanscoy with four points and Clay Martinez with two points.

In the boys’ loss to Gore, a 3-point basket by Clifton gave the Grizzlies a 12-10 lead with 3:25 left in the first quarter, but the Pirates ended the period on a 10-2 run to take a 2214 lead heading into the second period.

The Pirates got as much as a 12-point lead in the second quarter as Burr Jaymes hit a basket to put Gore ahead 3321 with 4:01 left before halftime.

After Brunk scored with 2:56 remaining in the first half to cut his team’s deficit to 33–23, the Pirates ended the first half with a 7-0 run, capped by four free throws by Jaymes to give Gore a 40-23 halftime advantage.

The Pirates got as much as a 31-point lead in the fourth quarter as Tate Brooksher’s basket with 3:41 left to play put Gore up 62-31.

In defeat, Brunk scored 10 points to lead Gans, followed by Langston with eight points, Clifton with seven points and White and Clay Martin with four points apiece.

The Gans home games with Arkoma that were slated for Friday were postponed until 6 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22.
