Roland teams split games with rival Muldrow, sweep Sequoyah-Tahlequah all at home
By DAVID SEELEY Sports Editor,

The Roland High School basketball teams got to enjoy their final week of the 2023 portion of their season at the Ranger Dome last week.

The Roland squads split their NOAA Conference home games against rival Muldrow on Dec. 19 in the latest installment of “The Battle of 64” on the hardwood. The Running Rangers down the Bulldogs 55-31, but the Lady Bulldogs rallied past the Lady Rangers 44-38.

Then to close out the pre-Christmas break portion of their season Thursday night at the Ranger Dome, the Roland teams swept Sequoyah-Tahlequah as the Lady Rangers opened the night with a 47-26 win over the Lady Indians, then the Running Rangers ended the night with a 45-32 victory over the Indians.

In the Roland boys’ rival win over Muldrow, the Running Rangers (8-1 overall, 4-0 in conference play) jumped out to a 21-6 lead after a period and never looked back.

For the game, Roland put a trio of players into double figures, with Carson Wiggins leading the way with a game-high 14 points, followed by Buck Triplett with 12 points and DaVohn Hall with 11 points. Mason Kemp had seven points, followed by Cason Perryman, Kejuan Youngblood and Paul Johnson with three points each and Raesean Perryman with two points.

In the Roland girls’ rival loss to Muldrow, the Lady Rangers (72, 2-2) had a 12-5 lead after a period en route to a 25-15 halftime advantage and a 33-23 lead entering the final period, but that was where the Lady Bulldogs (6-2, 2-1) bit back hard as they outscored the Lady Rangers 21-5 to get the come-frombehind win. In defeat, Kynlei Earnhart led Roland with 12 points, followed by Lilly Medicine Bird and Haven Freeman with nine points each, Halle Freeman and Addison Cole each with three points and Ryanne Nelke with two points.

In the Roland girls’ win over Sequoyah-Tahlequah, the Lady Rangers made sure there was not going to be a comeback by the opposition like what happened 48 hours before. Roland jumped out to a 14-2 lead after a quarter, en route to a 25-7 halftime advantage and a 35-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

For the game, Nelke scored a game-high 17 points and Haven Freeman added 11 points to lead Roland, followed by Halle Freeman with eight points, Earnhart with six points and Medicine Bird with five points.

In the Roland boys’ victory over Sequoyah-Tahlequah, the Running Rangers jumped out to a 15-13 lead after a period, then doubled up the Indians 12-6 in the second quarter for a 27-19 halftime advantage. After the Indians used an 8-3 third quarter to cut their deficit to 30-27 entering the final period, the Running Rangers put away the game with a 15-5 fourth quarter.

For the game, Wiggins led Roland with 13 points, followed by Hall with eight points, Kemp with seven points, Kade Shook with six points, Raesean Perryman with five points and Triplett, Cason Perryman and Johnson with two points apiece.
