Glory to God in the Highest
Commentary
December 19, 2023
Glory to God in the Highest
By Shirley R. Watts,

Jesus Christ is Born

“And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger…” (Luke 2:2).

Jesus, Born of the Holy Spirit, the Son of God, born of a virgin, in a stable, a human not an angel, a Jew not a Gentile, the tribe of Judah, family of David, born in Bethlehem, the city of David. His name is Jesus, He is great, called the Son of the Highest, receives the throne of David. He will reign over Judah forever and no end to His Kingdom. God was manifest in the flesh!

Angel’s Message

“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night…And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid… Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people… For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord…And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:8-14).

I bring you good tidings of great joy. This is the message that all Christians must give to the world and as we share this, it must be with great joy! This message is for all people. Jesus is the one and only Savior (Jn. 14:6). He left Heaven and came to earth to give His life for sinners. He knew no sin, committed no sin and He was the only One who could satisfy the sin debt. His Birth, life, death and resurrection was to glorify God the Father.

Heavenly Host

“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:15-21).

Wow, what a worship service it must have been on the country side where the shepherds were watching their flock at night. First, the message of the good news, now the Praise service. I think all churches should preach regularly the message of Jesus, the good news and follow up with a praise service. Look at the praise again: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”Amen. It was a joyful time! Let us all take time to say this each day this month and forever.

Let’s Go See!

The shepherds did not waste time seeking the Baby in the Manger.

“So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds” (Luke 2:1519).

They heard and seen the Good News, and “they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child” and those who receive the Good News marveled when they heard the message.

Are you sharing the Birth, the Good News of Jesus Christ who was born to die for our sins? Does your life reflect the Joy of knowing Jesus? The Church is falling short of reflecting the Joy of Jesus! To some is it just “old news”, and many Christians don’t talk about the Good News much or at all.

Praise God

“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them” (Luke 2:1920).

The shepherds left that service glorifying and praising God. How do you leave a service of hearing the Good News?

When you look into the Manger, what do you see, hear and do?
