Cherokee Speakers Bureau: All fluent Cherokee speakers are invited to this free monthly luncheon held from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. every second Thursday of the month and hosted by the Cherokee Nation Language Department at the Durbin Feeling Langauge Center in Tahlequah. Cherokee Nation is sharing its rich history and culture in a new class, “Cherokee Nation: A History of Resilience.” Join us in Muskogee from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday through August 10 at Three Rivers Health Center. The class is the first in a developing program and offers a timeline of Cherokee history and events with an emphasis on traditional Cherokee arts, culture and oral history from pre-European contact through present day. “Cherokee Nation: A History of Resilience” is free and open to the public with registration on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will be presented a certificate of completion at the end of the class. Stop by the Male Seminary Recreation Center in Tahlequah from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a traditional cultural activity focused on pinch pots and baskets. These traditional games and activites, which are free and open to the public, will take place at the recreation center every Thursday in July. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Learn how to make your very own round reed basket from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Saline Courthouse Museum in Rose. Materials and expert guidance are provided to each participant as they work and learn how to weave reed to make a beautiful basket that they are free to take home. The instructor for this very special class is Cherokee National Treasure Anna Sixkiller. Admission is $25 per person. Cherokee Nation is hosting an at-large meeting in Albuquerque for at-large Cherokee citizens living in Arizona. Come out and visit with Cherokee Nation leaders and take part in cultural activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cibola High School Cafeteria, 1510 Ellison Drive NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tribal Registration will be on site at all locations for photo IDs and citizenship applications. Education Services and Cherokee Vote will also be in attendance to assist citizens. The Cherokee Nation’s 2023 annual Traditional Native Games competition continues beginning at 10 a.m. at the Steve Owens Sports Complex in Gore. Competitions will include a cornstalk shoot, horseshoes, marbles and blowgun which will start at 10 a.m., with hatchet-throwing and stickball shootout at 11 a.m. and chunkey at noon. Registration will be held 30 minutes before each of the games. Competitors in the hatchet throw, blowgun, stickball shootout, chunkey and cornstalk shoot must bring their own sporting materials for the games. Summer Slam 5K: Join the Cherokee Nation Wings Program for this 5K race beginning at 7:30 a.m. behind the Carson Community Bank in Westville. The race is free to members of the Wings Program, but is also open to non-members for a fee. The Saline Courthouse Museum in Rose presents “Dan Mink: Cherokee by Design.” A Cherokee National Treasure for graphic design, Dan Mink uses the imagery of his Cherokee ancestors to develop a visual identity for today’s Cherokee Nation. Best known for the striking motifs he creates for the annual Cherokee National Holiday, Dan also designed the insignias for key Cherokee Nation initiatives and legislation along with other iconography celebrating Cherokee history, culture, and community. This exhibit includes examples from his vast body of work and memorabilia from his career. The exhibit will be open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. now through October 7.
